Introducing the tutor, Judy Jackson: I am really looking forward to sharing my passion for classical mosaics with the class in Semester 2 this year. I speak 3 languages- I taught French and German at High School and when I retired, I learned Spanish. I love travelling, especially to see the wonderful Roman mosaics at archaeological sites and museums throughout Europe.

I have been doing mosaics for about 10 years, but 5 years ago I decided that I wanted to know more about the classical tradition so that I could improve my technique and style. I wanted to learn the ancient rules and apply them to my practise. The teacher that has inspired me the most is the Australian mosaicist Caitlyn Hepworth who runs courses through her web site The Art of Andamento. She is an outstanding teacher and her courses attract on-line students from all over the world.

My course is an 8-week beginners’ course, which I am sure will be useful for all levels and whatever type of mosaics you create. The emphasis will be on precision cutting and laying as well as the andamento (flow). I began my mosaic journey using ceramics, but I am currently using Mexican smalti, cinca (unglazed ceramic) and marble. I have been on the WA committee of MAANZ (Mosaics Association for Australia and New Zealand) for over a year and attended the MAANZ symposium in Geelong last year.
