Tai Chi is a vital part of the activities at the KCLC, with classes several days a week, and no class is more active and enthusiastic than the Wednesday 9 am Beginners and Continuing students’ group. Mind you some of the “beginners” have several years’ acquaintance with Tai Chi and lots of commitment, but as our instructor, Mike Jefferson often reminds us the moves in Tai Chi are often complex and it is OK to take years to learn them, which is a great relief to some of us, including me.
Just to spice things up for our long-serving members Mike has introduced Taiji Qigong Shibashi this year and every now and again does a new exercise saying “now you remember this one” – perhaps some do!
Our class has an enrolment of about 30 people, with generally about 25 at any one time, which is just about all we can easily fit into the hall, but we are all very flexible, in every sense of the word, and can accommodate any situation.
Mike is an extremely patient and good-humoured instructor who is prepared to repeat the exercises and patterns of the sets as frequently as is needed to allow those of us with short term memory problems to hopefully absorb and retain the moves of the various blocks of activities in each set, such as “Hug the Tree”, Sweep the Sky”, “The Archer” , “ Needles to Sea Bottom” and “Throw the Pies”.
Those of you who have seem Tai Chi on the TV and movies may think it is a sedate and gentle activity only meant for extremely old people, but it is very taxing, mainly on the brain!
We certainly need the breaks between our 30-minute periods in our 90-minute sessions. You can also see from the attached photos that we are all certainly not OLD!

Tai Chi helps general fitness and health, strengthens the muscles and in particular improves balance and breathing and lessens falls. Apparently, it is ‘Moving meditation’.
Anyway, it is enjoyable and develops a positive mental attitude.
