Description: The Pottery for Beginners class is for those students who have never done pottery before. For a full description of the skills covered and safety requirements see Further Details.
Requirements: As there are limited places available in this very popular course, please do not enrol unless you can commit to attending every session, barring unforeseen circumstances and we can only accept enrolments in one pottery course per member. It is only available for true beginners, if you would like to continue your pottery journey in future semesters, you will then be required to enrol in one of the Pottery Workshop classes.

Description

The fee includes a $30 levy for the use of the Centre resources. There will be a small additional fee for firing.

Full DescriptionThe Pottery for Beginners class will show you how to hand-build and use the pottery wheel. 

First 8-week term:

  • Week 1 – Studio rundown and purchasing of tools and clay
  • Week 2 – Pinch pot week
  • Week 3 – Slab building week
  • Week 4 – Working with coils
  • Week 5 – Continuing with week 2 – 4 projects
  • Week 6 – Glazing 
  • Week 7 – Pottery wheel demonstration 
  • Week 8 – Continuing with personal projects

Second 8-week term:

During the second term, Kerrianne will support you in the projects of your choosing. As there are only 4 pottery wheels available in the studio, some of you may continue with your chosen hand building technique or focus on your wheel skills.

Requirements: Enclosed shoes must be worn. See also Work Health and Safety information below.

Essential Requirements

  • Enclosed shoes must be worn.
  • Tool kit (a basic tool kit is available to purchase on your first session for $10 cash)
  • Clay also available for purchase: White $24, Buff $26
  • Mask for spraying
  • Safety glasses
  • Apron

Recommended additions to your pottery tool kit:

  • Medium-sized bin liners for wrapping
  • Textured fabrics and stamps
  • Tape measure
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Set square
  • Tea towels for slab rolling
  • Rubber gloves
