Portrait Painting With Oils – Master Class

What is a Master Class? These are short courses (half, one or two days) conducted by accomplished artists during our semester break. The artists are paid at a professional rate with the course fee covering this plus other expenses.
Description: In this full-day Master Class, Nisa will teach the Alla Prima or Direct Painting method of portrait painting in oils. It is aimed at those already experienced in oil painting and is unsuitable for beginners. Wet-on-wet, or alla prima (Italian for “at first attempt”), is a painting technique where wet paint layers are applied over still-wet layers. Primarily used in oil painting, this method requires quick work to complete before the initial layers dry.
The session will include the correct positioning of a portrait, the mixing of colours and how to analyse tones and values. Students will commence their portrait during the session and gradually adjust and build up layers of different values in their own time based on what they learned during the session.
Requirements Summary (see link for full details): Class members will need to bring a prepared canvas or canvas board, their own selection of paints and clean-up resources and a high-resolution, printed A4 image of the portrait they would like to paint. Due to the time restraint, class members must have all their resources as described in the link: Nisa Lourvanij – Portrait Painting – requirements
