This Club has been around for several years and has many long-time members. I was new to the club and I wondered what had contributed to the longevity of Book Club 10.
Many fail because the choice of books may be left to one person and the members may not particularly like the selection. Here members each take turns to choose a book which allows for a variety of tastes. This has worked well and although not all members may have enjoyed a book, it was read, and opinions were listened to.
Sometimes book clubs are serious. We are serious about books but we are a social bunch as well, happy to let a meeting meander in and out of topic, talk about our experiences and reflect on ‘the bigger picture’.
Book Club 10 is exactly that, a club, not an English Literature class. We don’t lecture and are not lectured to. Conversation is not monopolised by one person; we listen and learn from members’ individual and shared experiences, differences in beliefs and culture.
This is my second book club. At my previous one there was, of course, a book, but it was basically cheese, wine and gossip. I don’t recall one single book I read in that group, but I do remember that it didn’t last long! Book Club 10 is different, we all love reading, it encourages us to read outside our comfort zone and persevere with a book even though it may not be one that we particularly enjoy. It is welcoming, inclusive and convivial.
Book Club 10 is appropriately named as I give it 10/10!
