From the Executive...

Enrolment Week

Once again, Enrolment Week was very busy, especially the first Tuesday morning of enrolments. We recognise that many members experienced a lot of frustration as the website battled to cope with the intense demand for enrolments as soon as we opened at 9.30am. We truly empathise with everyone as we too experienced the same delays and timeouts at the Centre. Our Enrolment Team valiantly carried on despite the obstacles and we are now working diligently to find a remedy for this situation for future enrolments.

We finalised 634 orders during the week and this is not counting the many, many duplicate orders we received which needed to be ’fixed’. We thank everyone for their understanding and patience. We extend our warm welcome to the 58 new members who have joined us this semester.

Special Dietary Notice

If you have a food allergy, please be mindful of any shared food in the Centre.

Enrolment News...

Enrolments have now closed

Enrolments are not permitted in the first two weeks of the Semester except for new members and returning members with extenuating circumstances (a $10 administration fee will be applied).

Late enrolments will be accepted from week three (Monday 12 August) providing there are vacancies and the tutor accepts late enrolments. Full course fees will be applied.

Visitors

No visitors will be permitted into any classes in the first two weeks of Term. Strict procedures are in place regarding visitors to classes, please enquire at the desk to find out if a class accepts visitors.

Enrolment Day

Thank you to the wonderful enrolment team and supporting volunteers that worked feverishly both behind the scenes and on enrolment day (battling against a rather sluggish website) to get everyone enrolled during enrolment week. A big thank you to those that also kept everyone fed and watered!

Bronwyn, Registrar

Workgroups...

Have you signed up for your workgroup yet?

A vital aspect of the smooth running of Kalamunda Community Learning Centre is the commitment of all members, who are enrolled in a full-time course, to volunteer in some way at the Centre. These tasks are vital in the day-to-day operation of the Centre and help us to keep our course costs so low.

We will be conducting an audit of workgroups in the next week - please reduce the workload of other volunteers having to chase you up and sign up for a task.

Not sure if you have 'Signed Up'? Once you are logged in to your account on the website, you will find your workgroup listed at the bottom of the Workgroup Sign Up Page. For example:
If nothing is listed, you will need to sign up for a Workgroup (unless you have already completed your workgroup prior to Term starting).

A big thank you to Pam who has now stepped down from her role in looking after workgroups. Please direct any workgroup queries through to myself (Mary) in the Office.

A very big thank you to all who have already locked in their workgroups.

Mary, Office Manager

Open Day...

Goodness how time flies! It is nearly Open Day again and I know that a lot of you are getting pieces of work together to display on Sunday 8 September.

Thank you to all the kind people who put their names down to help either on the day or pricing goods for the White Elephant table. Yes, we are having that again. It is always such fun to find those exciting little treasures and also to clear out some of the unwanted or unappreciated things around the house.

Please remember that we are not allowed to sell electrical goods!

Please do not bring anything to the Centre till two weeks before the event (Monday 26 August). I will be able to store some stuff in a garage as there is not much room for storage at the Centre.

A special request... Could we please borrow some tables from you? The plastic fold up ones that you can get from the hardware stores. Please make sure you write your name clearly on the underside of the tables to make sure you get the same ones back after the event. If you think you can help, please email kclc@kclc.org.au for the attention of Bridget.

I will be handing out forms in the first week to all the classes requesting tutors identify how many tables and/or display boards they will need. Artists, please keep your paintings to just two per person as the boards are very expensive to hire.

Please could all tutors return the forms as soon as possible so that we can organise all the equipment needed for the day.

Many thanks
Bridget Hogarth

Class News...

We have just a few class news wrapups to enjoy from Semester One...

Mr Fixit Delivers on the Handyperson Course

The Handyperson Course ran over two terms and was supported with incredible and easily accessible resources provided by our Tutor, John Paskulich.

Some comments about the course:
  • Each person aimed at being a bit more independent with a range of home handyperson tasks and took this opportunity to learn basic tools, select materials for any given task and follow the method to safely complete simple DIY repairs and restorations
  • No class room injuries occurred so it is safe
  • Equipment and materials were provided. You were asked to bring in some of your tools.
  • Good team spirit quickly developed to help others and share the learning(s)
  • Participants began to apply this new knowledge and made a start on some home projects. Some examples of home project restorations:

That was the Week that was

Lively discussion occurred on a wide range of current affairs issues, including:
Primary School education, Donald Trump, HAMAS, Problems with ATAR, Global Warming, AI and ChatGPT, Harvard Governance, Ukraine, The Israeli Palestinian Conflict, Large SUV’s in Cities,nGreen vs Nuclear Energy, Dreamtime Maths in Schools, Iran and Terror, Locked Out of Our National Parks, Record Temperatures, The Marvel of Roman Concrete, Artic Permafrost, Ocean Spray Emits PFAS, Anti - Ageing, China and Taiwan and much more.

All very interesting and entertaining, mainly on the back of the great work done by Moderator Norman Venus, who read widely and circulated articles for discussion in advance of each meeting.

We all look forward to more in Semester Two.

Clive
