Welcome...

This edition of Centre Talk reminds us that the AGM is on Friday this week. If you want to have a say in your Learning Centre, this is the time. Registrar Bronwyn gives us a sneak peak of new courses for Semester 2. Maybe it's time to channel your inner Fred Astaire and Gingers Rogers, and let your body benefit from the aerobic exercise of dance💃🕺. If opera is your thing, it is possible Pavarotti may be heard in the corridors or you can just get your hands into some clay and shape objects or even increase your knowledge of beer. Humans have been brewing for 13,000 years but this is probably not the sort of aging that would improve the consumption🍻

There is a pictorial summary of the last Centre Lunch, a request for unwanted jewellery and buttons from the Scrap to Sculpture Class, with Art and Writing dominating the Class Reports. While the Needles and Pins Class creative work currently in the display cabinet and definitely worth a look.

Observations on getting older...
I attended a 95th birthday party on the weekend and the conversation drifted into retirement and how, instead of days getting slower, time seemed to be speeding up as you got older. I had memories of a recent class on Quantum Physics that had not disappeared into the darkest recess of my mind either so I have come up with MBC’s quantum theory of aging😂.

I know Einstein did not contribute any theories to aging but according to his theory of relativity, as an object approaches the speed of light, time slows down when compared to a stationary observer. Maybe, as the years pass, we move away from the ‘speed of light’ and time speeds up, the clock ticks faster.

How do we move away from speed of light? Maybe the photons, which move at the speed of light, and are emitted when an electron in an atom, drops an energy level, and so gradually move slower than the speed of light the older we get, and hence we think time is going faster - a possible new theory of aging. It is interesting that an electron exists for 10²⁸ years, so obviously re-cycled, and the average 70 kg person has about 10²⁸ electrons and some must be continually decaying.

Centre Lunch...

Thank you so much to everyone who supported our last Centre Lunch. The promotional video certainly whetted a few appetites and encouraged many to attend, resulting in a wonderful turnout! The hall was filled with a fantastic buzz, great company, and delicious food.

Keep an eye out for the date of our next Centre Lunch as we get closer to the start of Semester Two.

Wanting Your Unwanted Jewellery or Buttons ...

The first project for Scrap to Sculpture in Semester Two, after the mid-year break, is to up-cycle unwanted jewellery or buttons into a sculpture.

Any donations would be appreciated and may be left on the Scrap to Sculpture shelf in the craft room.

Art History
Wednesday AM

The Art History Course is a committed group, this term focusing on Greek and Roman Art, exploring these periods of artistic practice through the paradigm of the wider social, urban and political context of their time. Tutor and artist Tony Fowler works closely with class members to bring the art of each period covered to life.

Students are provided with pre-reading materials as optional preparation and information in the class is conveyed both through verbal and visual presentations including with videos, photographs and tabled texts. Paintings, frescoes, sculpture, ceramics and architecture are all part of this mix.
Students with a particular interest in an aspect of the artistic developments or historical periods covered, are invited to bring to the class objects, texts and photographs from their travels. Some may choose to give a short presentation on an interest area. Others opt to participate in discussion around the table or to be more of a listener. Since its inception, the course has covered a wide spectrum of art history from modern to renaissance art and art from all quarters of the globe.

Each semester has a different focus. During the semester break several of the group meet for coffee to maintain contact and continuity.

All are welcome.

Writing Class
Monday AM

First thing Monday mornings, a determined group of writers gathers around the table, armed with notebooks, laptops and hopeful first drafts. At the helm is our fearless leader, Tania, whose skilled and patient guidance keeps us writing, revising and encouraging one another each week.

Together we explore the craft of writing, sharing our work and offering feedback that helps shape rough ideas into stronger pieces. There are lively discussions and plenty of laughter – as evidenced by these tongue-in-cheek ‘the dog ate my homework, Miss’ poems.
All week I did wait,
not at the front gate,
for a story to arise,
that might win a prize.

But the call never came
so without any shame
i wrote this ditty
let's hope it's not a pity

while I take up your time
reading these limes*

*limes rhymes better than lines and also makes no sense

By Graham Chapman
My heart’s filled with sorrow
I won’t be there tomorrow
Because I am sick with a blight

But come hell or high water
Like a lamb to the slaughter
I’ll finish my homework tonight.

Inspired by Grayum
I’ve crafted this poyum
And offer it for your delight.

My story will follow
At latest tomorrow
But probably some time tonight

Oil Painting
Monday PM
The Class is comprised of both new and returning students taught by the very vibrant Nisa Louranjii who grew up in Thailand surrounded by art and artists. Nita has exhibited herself and has been commissioned privately to create artworks. She brings a lot of energy and direction to her classes. Students attending Nita’s classes are given heaps of useful information about brush skills and qualities, tonal values, impact and use of colour including colour mixing and composition. Each of these building blocks are applied in different ways.
Nisa Lourvanij – Nisa grew up in Thailand, surrounded by art and artists. Her family, accomplished artists themselves, passed on their passion and skill to her. Since moving to Australia in the 1980s, Nisa has been inspired by local artists and has shared her knowledge through Kalamunda Community Learning Centre.

Over the last 30 years she has exhibited paintings at Mazenod and other colleges and shires and has undertaken many private commissions. Nisa has tutored oil painting at the Kalamunda Community Learning Centre for eight years, the excellence of her teaching evident in her students’ quality artworks. During these weekly sessions Nisa teaches all aspects of oil painting.
