Welcome...
It is a big newsletter this week. A great read about happenings and activities throughout the KCLC. The Coordinators remind us about Remembrance Day, Health & Safety, with a note Mary will be away next week plus an introduction to Vin Marelich, new Executive Committee Member. Registrar Bronwyn informs about 2027 classes and there is a request for a Hiking tutor.
There is a roundup from the successful Centre Lunch, Crèche & Class News while Cherie Reffell is remembered for her contribution to the KCLC.
The display cabinet has wonderful examples of Pottery for viewing.
It seems like the weather cannot decide what season it is but at least there is consistency in the Centre😊.

From the Coordinators...
Remembrance Day – 11 November Remembrance Day is an opportunity to acknowledge those who died or suffered while serving in wars, conflicts and peace operations. At 11am on 11th November we encourage everyone to observe a minute’s silence in remembrance of those who have given so much for our freedom.
Keeping our Centre safe is everyone’s responsibility and we appreciate your help in looking after one another.
One particularly important reminder is about eating and drinking in designated areas. Please ensure that all food and drinks are consumed only in allocated kitchen or other designated eating areas in classrooms, and never in areas where chemicals, craft materials or other potentially hazardous substances are used or stored.
Mary will be away for a week, and Caroline will be in the office as usual. If you need any assistance with anything, please remember that you can always speak with a Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator or our receptionists who will be happy to help where they can.
Have a lovely fortnight everyone. Enjoy your classes, take care and we look forward to catching up with you all around the Centre.

New Executive Committee Member Vin Marelich
Susan and I settled in Lesmurdie in the early 70's before moving to Gooseberry Hill where we have lived for over 50 years. Our children attended Gooseberry Hill Primary School and Kalamunda Senior High School.
I worked for the Education Department as a classroom teacher and primary school principal.
Susan and I were active members of the Friends of the Railway Reserve for over 20 years as the track was joined up, developed and the seating, station signs and entry features installed.
We have attended classes at KCLC for many years. We continue to attend classes and greatly appreciate the vast number of volunteers who enable this community facility to continue to operate.

From the Registrar...
I am delighted to report that we have received proposals for a number of new courses including Decoupage, Watercolour for Beginners, Drawing for Absolute Beginners, Spinning with Wool (we received enough expressions of interest to make this viable) and Open Gardens, plus a couple of others that are still under wraps. There is also a possible computer or AI course on the horizon; if the computer course is something that you might be interested in, I would appreciate hearing what aspects you would like included. I can be contacted at [email protected]
While sessions and rooms are filling up, the craft room has a vacancy Tuesday afternoon next year. If you have a craft you would like to share, I would love to hear from you. There are also limited sessions and rooms available most days so if you are considering offering a new course, thank you! Please let me know before the 2nd of November as this is when we will be finalising the semester one 2027 programme.

Hiking Tutor Needed
We’re also looking for a new Kalamunda Hikers tutor! This walking group course usually runs in Term 2, when the weather is a little cooler, and caters for up to 12 participants. The group usually meets at KCLC at 9.15am and carpools to the start of the trail for an approximately 2-hour walk.
Walks can be chosen from the many local trails featured on the City of Kalamunda website, or you’re welcome to plan and lead your own routes. Ideally, we’d love to hear from two people who could share the role, meaning you would only need to lead four walks each during the term.
If you enjoy walking and would love to share your favourite trails with others, we’d love to hear from you! Please contact [email protected] for more information or to express your interest.

Centre Lunch...
Thank you to everyone who joined us for Friday’s Centre Lunch! It was wonderful to see so many members enjoying the delicious food (and wine!) and each other’s company.
A big thank you to the Executive Committee for sharing updates on what’s happening at the Centre, and to our Centre Liaison Group (CLG) members for introducing themselves. We hope everyone found the session informative and enjoyed the more relaxed format compared to our usual General Meetings.
Thank you also to everyone who took the time to browse the photo albums and help put more names to familiar faces. It was lovely to see members getting involved and sharing their memories!

Just a very brief note this time. Wednesday crèche is up and running, though, sadly, there have been many absences due to illness among the little ones. We wish them a speedy recovery.
I have been struck lately by the number of crèche carers who themselves had children in the crèche (one, two or even three) - once upon a time. They know first-hand about the importance of the crèche, as a welcome relief from the totality of child rearing. A big “Thank you” to all the volunteers who are keeping this wonderful service going.”

Exercise to Music...
Not everyone knows what goes on behind the hall doors on Wednesday mornings - they see several people carrying yoga mats and hear the music🎶.
We follow a regular routine each week - encouraged and guided by our tutor, Lesley -beginning with warm-up and muscle toning before moving onto stretching, a short cardio spot and then weights. All the time working to the counts and the beat.
The pace changes and we calm down with some yoga and balance before closing off with relaxation time.
Everyone works at their own comfort level - we’re not trying for national colours - just feeling good after each session.
Watercolour Workshop...
A group of members from the Watercolour Workshop group met during the break to immerse themselves in nature.
We had a very peaceful and challenging few hours painting outdoors.
It extended us beyond our comfort levels, but it was a very rewarding experience.
We sadly announce the passing of a long-time friend and true advocate of the Learning Centre.
Cherie Reffell was a most wonderful support to friends experiencing hardship or trauma, and then, when her own health problems developed, she approached them, head on, with stoicism, positivity and courage.
In the early days Cherie came fortnightly to Monday’s embroidery. Finding more time after retirement she dived into other creative classes such as ceramic painting, home maintenance and water colour painting. Recently starting a new class called 'Dressmaking for Pleasure'.
In the past few decades Cherie has been an invaluable member of the Centre, from running the Members' Market on our Open Days to corralling the many eager members on enrolment days. Always ready to lend a hand above and beyond what was asked, Cherie will be remembered fondly and sadly missed.
I first met Cherie in the 'Dressmaking for Pleasure' class at the start of Semester 1 2025. Cherie told me she decided to start and facilitate the class on Friday mornings and afternoons because she 'just wanted to sew with other people'. In the beginning there were only three of us, but the numbers grew, and those Fridays became a highlight of the week, chatting and sewing with other people!
There are now six of us who regularly sew on Fridays, and I'm sure we will continue for years to come. Thank you Cherie, we will miss you and think of you when we sew.

Class News Semester Two...
✍ Please feel free to let us know anything interesting that you are up to in your Semester Two classes, even though we don't have any official class news reporters. Submissions can be emailed to [email protected] or written notes handed in to KCLC office.
This can be a class activity, or description, of what happens in the class (or tell us about your wonderful Tutor!). Make it succinct, around 150 words, give or take, and photos. These will be shared in Centre Talk when space permits.
Please note that submissions for Centre Talk should be emailed to [email protected] An email, acknowledging receipt of your contribution, will be sent.
