Centre Talk

27 September 2026

Dates for your diary
Monday 12 October - Term 4 Commences
Friday 23 October - Centre Lunch
Friday 4 December - Last Day of Term 4

Welcome...

Hello,

The KCLC Open Day dominates this newsletter in 'From the Coordinators' and Bridget's round-up. There is information about Term 4 courses from Bronwyn, a call for new courses and tutors in 2027, while Caroline provides a brief report on the success of the Speaker Spot and Katherine an update on the crèche and good news for Term 4.

A colourful, pictorial report on the crochet in the display cabinet gives a glimpse for those who missed the display in real-time. There is also an invitation to celebrate the life of Elaine Sheldon from her family.

Have a lovely break,

Ciao
Marilyn, Editor

From the Coordinators...

Our Open Day was a wonderful opportunity to showcase everything that happens at the Centre, and we are so grateful to everyone who gave their time and energy to make the day such a success.

There was such an incredible display of work throughout the Centre, showcasing just how talented and creative our members are. There are far too many classes and activities to mention individually, but walking around the Centre and seeing the wonderful work on display was a real reminder of just how much talent we have within our KCLC community.

And every year, it seems to get better and better! It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying the day, meeting others and taking the time to see what our Centre has to offer.

As with any event, there will always be things we can learn from and improve on, and constructive feedback is always welcome. We would simply ask that feedback is shared with kindness and consideration, remembering that our Centre and its events are made possible by volunteers who generously give their time.

So much goes on behind the scenes to make a day like this happen, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped, whether it was setting up, welcoming visitors, running stalls and activities, helping throughout the day or packing everything away afterwards.

There is always room to grow and improve, but there is also so much to celebrate. We should be very proud of what our KCLC community achieves together and of the incredible talent, generosity and enthusiasm that makes our Centre such a special place.

It has been a lovely term, and it has certainly gone by so quickly. We look forward to seeing everyone again next term, although it is a little scary to think we have only 91 days until Christmas!

Don’t Forget…

Our next Centre Lunch is on Friday 23 October. We hope to see many of you there for a lovely opportunity to get together and enjoy each other’s company.

Take care.

Your Coordinators, Anne-Marie, Rosemary and Susanne

From the Registrar...

Term 4 Courses

If you are planning on joining one of the courses that starts in Term 4, or one of the continuing courses on sale, we encourage you to enrol before the first session in the new term. It causes far less disruption to the tutor and class if all new class members start at the same time. In-person enrolments will be accepted at the Reception Desk from Monday 12 October. Thank you.

Open Day Report...

WOW! What a day. The weather was almost perfect, the displays looked magnificent, the UkeARoos were in great form, the café excelled itself with great food, soups and service, the markets were doing a roaring trade, and finally, the trial run of the Hall and Green Room was a great success.

Thank you all so much for your time and effort to make this the greatest day of the year, if not ever. I cannot believe the talent that the members of this Centre produce, and the enthusiasm of the volunteers is second to none.
As I wandered round the Centre (as I had nothing to do), I was impressed by the warm and friendly atmosphere everyone had created, whether it was in the café or indeed anywhere else.

If anyone has any positive ideas for improving the occasion (negative ones not so welcome), then please let me know. I have ideas for next year, but just like this year, it will be an ongoing experiment that we may never finish.

From one exhausted but happy Bridget, Open Day Leader or BHC

Thank You, Zofia!

A heartfelt thank you to Zofia Paluszak for her wonderful generosity in supporting Kalamunda Community Learning Centre.

During our Open Day, Zofia donated a beautiful collection of original fibre artworks and prints for a Sealed-Bid Auction. Thanks to the enthusiastic support of our bidders, the auction raised over $600 for KCLC.

We are incredibly grateful to Zofia for sharing her talent and creativity to help support our community learning centre. Thank you also to everyone who placed a bid and helped make the auction such a success.

Speaker Spotlight...

Those who attended Friday's Speaker Spot were treated to a captivating presentation by Jen Irvine on the development of her new musical, The Centre, along with beautiful performances of several songs by singer Hannah Charlotte, accompanied by Jen on the keyboard.

This inspiring project is one to watch, and we look forward to hearing much more about it from Jen as it develops. To stay updated, please follow Jen on her Facebook Page or email [email protected] to be added to her contact list. Thank you to Jen and Hannah Charlotte for a wonderful afternoon!

Crèche News...

Happy news!

Starting next term, there will be two crèche sessions each week – Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Four mothers have enrolled their children for the new Wednesday session, which Sue Bailey is leading.
So, we are now helping eight “Mums” to have two hours each week at the Centre, when they can concentrate on doing something of their choice without being interrupted, or having to be constantly vigilant.

People who have “been there” will understand how much having such a break means.

My thanks to Sue and to all the others who have made this development possible.

Katherine Horne, Crèche Liaison

In Memoriam...

Elaine Sheldon

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Elaine Sheldon on Sunday 13 September.

Elaine's family warmly invites friends to join them in celebrating her life and saying farewell on Saturday 10 October at 11am at the Boab Tavern, Dundas Road, High Wycombe.

Class News Semester Two...

✍ Please feel free to let us know anything interesting that you are up to in your Semester Two classes, even though we don't have any official class news reporters. Submissions can be emailed to [email protected] or written notes handed in to KCLC office.

This can be a class activity, or description, of what happens in the class (or tell us about your wonderful Tutor!). Make it succinct, around 150 words, give or take, and photos. These will be shared in Centre Talk when space permits.

Please note that submissions for Centre Talk should be emailed to [email protected]. An email, acknowledging receipt of your contribution, will be sent.
