From the Coordinators...

As we head further into May at KCLC, there are a few important reminders and upcoming events for everyone to keep in mind.

With the ongoing work taking place at Jorgensen Park, the car park has become much busier than usual. Please take extra care when driving into and around the car park area and be mindful of pedestrians and other vehicles at all times.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the evacuation drills completed last week. These practice drills are an important part of keeping our Centre safe and ensuring everyone knows what to do in an emergency.

A reminder that the KCLC AGM will be held on Friday 5 June at 12.00pm. We encourage all members to attend and be involved in the future direction of our Centre.

Our next Centre Luncheon will be held on Friday, 22 May at 11.45am. We look forward to another enjoyable gathering and thank everyone involved in organising these special events.

Some good news shared by Mary that the Zip HydroTap has now been fixed, which will no doubt be welcomed by many members.

Looking ahead, don't forget Speaker Spot on Friday 19 June. Another great opportunity to connect, learn, and share together.

Thank you to the volunteers who answered our recent call out. It is wonderful to welcome some new volunteers on board, and we appreciate the continued support that helps make KCLC such a welcoming and supportive community.

Lastly, as we head further into flu season and with COVID also circulating in the community, we kindly remind everyone that if you are feeling unwell, please stay home or consider wearing a mask to help keep our community safe and healthy.

SEE YOU THERE!

Crèche News...

Our Thursday morning crèche is going very well, and at capacity, thanks to our wonderful crèche leader Katherine Horne and her team of volunteers. As interest is growing again, we are exploring the feasibility of offering a second volunteer run crèche either Tuesday or Wednesday mornings.

For this to be possible we would need:
  • A new crèche leader who would attend, and run, each of the 16 sessions in Semester Two plus organise the volunteer roster. This is an unpaid position, but the leader would receive a coupon at the end of the semester. The leader would need a Working with Children Check Card, paid for by the Centre.
  • A team of volunteers who can assist for at least 2 sessions during the semester. This would be registered as their workgroup commitment. A Working with Children Check Card and would be paid for by the Centre.
  • Enough expressions of interest in using the crèche on either of these days.
To help us in our deliberations we ask that those who are interested in either volunteering to assist, or to use the service, to complete and submit an ‘Expression of Interest’ via this link: Kalamunda Community Learning Centre

We would appreciate receiving expressions of interest by 1st June so we can finalise the Semester Two program.

Class News...

Needles and Pins
Monday AM

This happy, welcoming group is well known for their delicious morning teas (there’s even a book!) as well as the broad range of quality needlework produced.
Our collective skill set is wide-ranging - sewing, quilting, embroidery, tapestry, knitting, crochet and needlepoint. Some in our group are recognised with ribbons at shows; other stitch solely because they enjoy it.

Many of us have been members of this group for decades; lasting friendships have been forged through shared life experiences, mastering new skills and who has the best scone recipe. We all work on our own projects at our own pace. Rosemary (facilitator) guides us with a gentle hand, and anyone needing assistance will find someone with the requisite skills.

Our light, bright room is perfect for needlework, and the outlook into the park is balm for the soul. Even the local magpies drop in when we gather on the verandah for the mandatory cuppa.
Oil Painting Workshop
Friday AM and PM

The Friday Oil Painting Group is very pleased to have Wendy Slater guiding them in the creation of their artworks. Each member chooses their own subject and style of painting and Wendy assists them with constructive advice and assistance. This covers a range of art genres from portraits to landscapes and still life.
Wendy has drawn and painted since she was a little girl. During her working life she was employed at Gibney’s who were commercial printers. She began her journey as a fully- fledged artist and designer at James St Technical School (later TAFE) where she completed a Diploma in Graphic Design. While there she was taught by some of WA’s most notable artists including Guy Grey-Smith, Tom Higgins, Arthur Cartwright and John Fawcett. She went on to study drawing and painting at Forrestfield TAFE with well-known hills artist Cedric Baxter as one of her teachers there.
Later Wendy began teaching herself at Kalamunda TAFE night school classes which used to run at Kalamunda SHS. She has also run art classes from her own studio.

As a mentor and tutor she glides seamlessly between the different projects each of her KCLC students are tackling; always positive and helpful, demonstrating techniques when needed and warmly giving advice and sharing tips and painting skills. Both new and returning students appreciate this generosity of tutoring style.

Afternoon Oil Painting
Wendy is not with us in the afternoon group but gives sanguine advice before departing in the morning. The afternoon group is smaller but is a cohesive, supportive and gentle group, many but not all continuing on from the morning with everyone helping each other with ideas and suggestions, often shared over a coffee and a wander around the class to see how we are each progressing with our paintings. It is fascinating how much each student can contribute with this informal creative learning approach, which is very much in the spirit of the learning centre’s philosophy of LEARNING THROUGH SHARING.

Jenny
Lionel Penketh, underway with a new landscape painting. He attends morning & afternoon sessions.
Book Club 1
Friday PM
While reading is often considered a solitary activity, book clubs transform into social experience, that encourages discussion, critical thinking and community building in a world increasingly shaped by fast-paced digital media.

Our book club at the Learning Centre has been in operation since the early days of the Centre, in fact one of our members joined the club on day one.
We have great enjoyment discussing the current book, in addition to a variety of local topics. Our brains are further stimulated by a delicious 3-course lunch, plus glasses of wine!

Recently we have discovered that we are all in our eighties and come from wide-ranging backgrounds which certainly expands the interesting conversations.
Looking to the future we would very much like to encourage some younger members to join our ranks.

Display Cabinet...

Knitting and Crochet Workshop on Mondays has a display of their work in the cabinet currently. Drop by and check out the creative work on display.

Lost Property...

This box was left this at reception; it has pens, notepads and some ukulele accessories. Does this belong to anyone?
