Friday 25 September - Speaker Spot

Welcome...

Hello,

Hope this edition finds you all well and surviving the current 'flu' season. There are many forms out there and each seems to have symptoms that are long-lasting. Take care of yourselves and of others. This responsibility is mentioned in the 'From the Coordinators' along with other items that the community needs to be aware of to maintain the smooth running of the KCLC.
Rosemary Hamersley is the next new Coordinator to meet, the next Speaker Spot has a music theme, while Bridget has an update about the fast approaching Open Day.

Memoir writing is the basis of the Class News while silversmithing is on show in the display cabinet.

Ciao
Marilyn, Editor

From the Coordinators...

Running Smoothly
The Centre continues to run smoothly, and we would like to thank everyone for their cooperation in helping to keep things organised, clean and secure.

A Reminder About Keys
If you require a key, please see our receptionists who will organise this for you. Please ensure that all keys are signed in and out using the key register held at Reception.

We also ask everyone to take responsibility for the security of the Centre. If you open a door during your class or activity, please check when you leave to ensure that it is properly closed and locked.

Kitchen and Morning/Afternoon Tea Areas
A reminder to everyone using the Kitchen and morning or afternoon tea areas to please clean up after yourselves. These areas are shared by many people throughout the day and should be left spotless and ready for the next group to use.

Please ensure all dishes are washed and put away, benches are wiped down, and any rubbish is disposed of appropriately.

Hygiene and COVID
We would also like to remind everyone about the importance of good hygiene. Regular handwashing and maintaining clean shared spaces help protect everyone at the Centre.

If you are feeling unwell or have symptoms of COVID or another contagious illness, please be considerate of others and take appropriate precautions before attending the Centre.

Exciting Events Coming up
We have some exciting events coming up at the Centre, including
  • Open Day 20th September
  • Speaker Spot 25th September
  • Centre Lunch 23rd October
Thanks everyone for your cooperation and support. See you around the Centre.

Your Coordinators, Anne-Marie, Rosemary and Susanne

Meet your Executive...

Rosemary Hamersley, Coordinator KCLC

Hello, I'm Rosemary Hamersley the other new Coordinator.

You may already know me as I have been the Catering Manager at KCLC for a while now.

I have lived in Kalamunda for most of my life and am a proud “Hills” girl.

My first connection with KCLC was back when, as a young Mum, I attended class while my two children were in the Crèche.
After a long break I rejoined the Centre after retiring in 2013.

I started drawing with Tony and embroidery in Needles and Pins, is where you will find me every Monday and I have even been a Tutor of the Botanical Dyeing class.

I am in the Centre on a Wednesday morning. As a Coordinator, I am here to listen, support, and represent the membership. Please feel free to stop by and have a chat.

Rosemary

The Centre: From Community to Musical...

Join Jen Irvine for the next Speaker Spot on Friday 25 September as she shares the inspiring story behind The Centre, a musical based on the remarkable women who founded WA's first Women's Learning Centre in Kalamunda in 1977, now Kalamunda Community Learning Centre.

Exploring themes of community, social inclusion and belonging, the musical celebrates the women who challenged traditional gender roles and came together to create lasting change.
As a special highlight, one of the performers will sing a couple of selected songs from the show.

Date: Friday 25 September.
Time: 12.45pm to 2.45pm.
Location: Kalamunda Community Centre Hall.
Cost: $5 per person (includes afternoon tea).
Booking: To reserve your seat, please book and pay at the KCLC Reception.
Booking deadline: 23 September unless sold out prior.

Open Day Update...

Here we are just a few weeks away from our Open Day and there are so many changes being made and who knows which will work and which will not. Hopefully most of them will.

The Hall (Red Room) will have all the smaller displays which have, in the past, been relegated to various rooms but were not widely patronised, which is a pity as some amazing work has been displayed in them with very few people seeing them.

Class displays of Artworks will be in the hallways and the Green Room. If the weather is fine, then maybe some works will be displayed on the verandah. Due to limited space in the hallways, artworks for sale must be displayed in the Gallery (see below), which will be in the White/Purple Room.

The White Elephant Stall will be back on the verandah outside the side door, the same as last year, along with the entertainment from the brilliant UkeARoos.

The Book Stall is going to be in the Creche (Pink Room) as it has for the last few years and again, no tatty books please. This year we will NOT be taking magazines as they do not sell, are very heavy and take up a fair amount of precious space.

Items for Sale: Could I remind you that all members selling items at Open Day must register beforehand. This includes, the Members Market, the Gallery (artworks for sale) and items offered for sale in class displays (if payment is to be made via Reception). The good news is that for this year, we will not be charging any commission. Please click here for full details. This process is under review and there will be changes for future events.

Please do not bring your donations into the Centre until the week starting Monday 14 September.

A special request: As in the past years, I am calling for people to lend us their large plastic tables. These were so appreciated last year and put to very good use. Do not forget to put your name and telephone number on them.

Rosemary and her team are running the café and I have heard that there are no less than seven varieties of soups to cater for every taste and diet. I can guarantee that the snacks will be awesome.

Everyone has been very generous giving up their Sunday and volunteering to come and help out on the big day but we are still a little short of helpers in the Café and on the White Elephant Stall. If you think you could help out then please click on the links below to see what time slots are available and add your name to the workgroups:
>> Cafe Workgroup <<
>> White Elephant Stall Workgroup <<

There will be another Centre Talk going out before the 20th where I will be able to give you more details about times and other arrangements.

Class News...

Memoir: Plan, Write, Publish

Tuesday AM

Jim Pollock has been writing for many years and now shares his love of writing with others in his seniors writing groups. With a background in teaching and research he has accumulated a vast amount of knowledge to share on all aspects of writing with his aim to assist you in creating a personal life story in the written word.

His course is designed to move participants through the 3 stages of writing, all self paced, to allow each writer to plan and develop their personal story to a stage for publication in whatever form they wish. The course covers memoir writing but also includes other types of creative non fiction such as autobiography and historical non fiction.

He has always asked the classes to see the template of 'archetype' as a pathway to develop personal transformation stories and as the course has developed more archetypes have been discussed.
If you attend his class you will be immersed in story and have the opportunity to develop a personal slice of life story to share with others. Along the way you will converse with like minded writers and enjoy the variety and knowledge that Jim brings to every class .
If you have a memory you want to develop into story please come along 🙏

Display Cabinet...

Silversmithing
Many fine examples of jewellery are found in the display cabinet. I have a nostalgic fondness for this class as it was the one my mother, Pam Bennet, undertook at the KCLC when she retired. She often wore the 'fruits of her labour' and when she could no longer manage, sold her equipment to a young budding artist.

Class News Semester Two...

✍ Please feel free to let us know anything interesting that you are up to in your Semester Two classes, even though we don't have any official class news reporters. Submissions can be emailed to [email protected] or written notes handed in to KCLC office.

This can be a class activity, or description, of what happens in the class (or tell us about your wonderful Tutor!). Make it succinct, around 150 words, give or take, and photos. These will be shared in Centre Talk when space permits.

Please note that submissions for Centre Talk should be emailed to [email protected]. An email, acknowledging receipt of your contribution, will be sent.
