Bridget has submitted the first glimpse of the upcoming 2026 Open Day, while Katherine gives an update on the Crèche. She also writes about Alison Sparrow in the 'In Memoriam' segment. Class news this week is about Watercolour is Therapy, and finally a message from the Health and Safety Sub Committee about evacuations for Semester Two.

Ciao

From the Coordinators...

Welcome back to KCLC

We are delighted to welcome everyone back to another term, and what a wonderful start we have had, with a record-breaking membership of 847 members!

A huge thank you to our wonderful enrolment team for working so hard helping to make the enrolment process run so smoothly. The many hours spent behind the scenes preparing, organising and assisting with enrolments are truly outstanding and very much appreciated.

We are also very pleased to welcome some new faces to the KCLC administration team.

Fiona Heley will be joining us as a volunteer, assisting at reception on Tuesday afternoons and helping to support our members.

Caroline Badminton who has previously volunteered at KCLC will now be joining us in a paid part-time role as a Business Support Officer. Caroline will be supporting the Registrar and Treasurer.

We are delighted to have both Fiona and Caroline joining the team and appreciate their contribution to the continued smooth running of KCLC.

As we begin another wonderful term at KCLC, I hope everyone enjoys their time at the Centre. Take the opportunity to meet new people, listen, learn and share your knowledge. Treat each other with kindness and respect, contribute where you can, and help make KCLC a welcoming place for everyone.

And most importantly have fun, enjoy your classes and make the most of everything KCLC has to offer!

Every fortnight I will be asking one of our new Executive Committee members to write up a little blurb introducing themselves to us all.

Your Coordinators, Anne-Marie, Rosemary and Susanne

Meet your Executive...

Sue Underwood, Coordinator KCLC

Hi I’m Sue Underwood a new Coordinator at KCLC.

I have lived in Kalamunda since 1985, and all three of my children were born in Kalamunda Hospital and attended local schools. I got involved with KCLC in about 1986 and was on the committee as Secretary for a brief period then. The Centre was an absolute lifeline for me as a young mum and I made some great friends back then.
Now the children are grown, and I've retired it's great to be involved with the Centre again especially in this lovely new building.

I regularly walk our dog Digby around Jorgensen Park and love the birds and natural beauty of our home here.

See you round the Centre.

Sue

From the Registrar...

TERM 4 Courses

The following courses which commence in Term 4 (12th October) still have vacancies and can be enrolled in on-line or in-person at Reception:

Workgroups

Thank you to everyone who responded to our call for additional volunteers for the two crèche sessions and the Open Day Café.

Our creche manager Katherine Horne almost skipped down the corridor with delight when she saw that the Wednesday crèche roster is now almost full, but we do still need more volunteers for the Thursday Crèche Roster. To register for either roster please click on these links:

Thursday Crèche Roster

Volunteers will need a current ‘Working With Children Check’. Applications for these can be collected from the Post Office or Reception. Once your application is submitted, bring in your receipt and we will refund you.

We are also still in desperate need for more volunteers to assist with the Open Day Café. Please click here to sign up.

Bronwyn, Registrar

Open Day...

Kalamunda Community Learning Centre is opening its doors between 10am and 4pm on Sunday 20 September for its much-anticipated Open Day. Admission is free and everyone is invited! It's a fantastic opportunity for students and tutors from the Centre to showcase the art and crafts from their classes to enthral and inspire.

Well, that time of year has come round again...Open Day...where we can all show off our year’s work to the world.

We are making a few changes this year and are going to have the smaller displays in and around the Hall, with the Café still at the far end of the Hall. The larger displays will be in the hallways and in the Green Room. All paintings for sale will be in the joint Purple/White Room. The market and pottery will remain the same in the Craft Room (Black Room).

Could the artists please only provide two paintings for display as we are not sure whether the new hanging rails will be up in time for the big day.

We will still have our very popular Book Stall and White Elephant Stall, but please remember that we cannot take electrical goods, and again, if you wouldn’t give the goods to your best friend, then please don’t give them to the stalls.

The forms are going out to all the classes this week, so please fill them in as to whether you would like to display or not. If you are, then mark down whether you need boards, tables, large or small and/or chairs.

We are hoping that the weather is going to be as kind to us as it has in past years. I look forward to this event every year.

Creche News...

Oh joy! My grateful thanks to the wonderful members who have recently signed up on the Wednesday and Thursday crèche workgroup lists.

There is now only one spot empty on Wednesdays and just a few on Thursdays. I am delighted that both sessions will be able to go ahead. Thank you all.

Mary has re-stocked the supply of Working with Children Check (WWCC) application forms, so please collect one from the office if you would like to join one of these workgroups, but do not have a WWCC card.

Meanwhile, the first Thursday morning session was loads of fun, with a recently donated toy electric guitar and new playdough (green and gold to welcome the Spring wattle blossom). What more could any toddler want!

Class News...

Watercolour is Therapy
Tuesday PM
Every Tuesday afternoon, this wonderful group assembles for a few hours of connection and creation (and cake!).

Members are free to work on their own watercolour projects.

There are many different styles and subjects in the group, and a walk around the room provides a great snapshot of the versatility of this medium.

In the first semester, paintings covered everything from abstracts, landscapes, woodland creatures, portraits, birds and a plethora of beautiful botanical studies.

This group is characterized by the generosity of members (and our tutor, Mavis) in sharing their resources, experience and techniques. Of equal importance is the opportunity for friends, mothers, daughters and even fathers, to spend a relaxing few hours creating together.

In Memoriam...

Alison Sparrow

It is with sadness that we inform members that Alison Sparrow passed away during the winter break. Alison was a valued member of Book Club 1 and she was very much missed at our meeting last week. As well as her friendship, both her literary knowledge and cooking prowess have been appreciated by fellow members (she generously shared recipes and her thoughts on books and authors).
With her husband Neville, Alison also belonged for some time to the Cryptic Crosswords group. Neville died in February this year, and we extend our sympathies to their children, Michael and Vanessa - who live in Canada – on the loss of both of their parents.

A celebration of Alison’s life will be held later this year, which family from Canada will attend.

Katherine Horne, Book Club 1

Message from The Health and Safety Subcommittee...

KCLC will not have an evacuation drill this semester.

The drills in semester one went well and all the relevant coordinators and wardens are now familiar with their roles. Similarly, the majority of members have participated in at least one drill this year. Just remember to look after any new members who missed out last semester!

CLASS SECRETARIES
Check back over your “Class Secretary Manual”. Your responsibilities are:
  • Lead the group out to the evacuation site.
  • Take the class roll and a pen to the evacuation site.
  • Call the roll and mark the class roll.
  • Once the roll is taken, report to the Fire Drill Coordinator.

TUTORS/ FACILITATORS

  • Direct the class members to immediately exit by the appropriate door.
  • Be last out shepherding any stragglers!
  • Ensure the class members stay together at the evacuation site.
  • If you don’t have a class secretary, they are absent or are not able to fulfil the requirements listed above please take the initiative and call the roll and report to the Fire Drill Coordinator.

CLASS MEMBERS
  • Familiarise yourself with the evacuation procedures and evacuation path diagram (on the classroom wall).

Class News Semester Two...

✍ Please feel free to let us know anything interesting that you are up to in your Semester Two classes, even though we don't have any official class news reporters. Submissions can be emailed to [email protected] or written notes handed in to KCLC office.

This can be a class activity, or description, of what happens in the class (or tell us about your wonderful Tutor!). Make it succinct, around 150 words, give or take, and photos. These will be shared in Centre Talk when space permits.

Please note that submissions for Centre Talk should be emailed to [email protected]. An email, acknowledging receipt of your contribution, will be sent.
