Centre Talk

Saturday 9 September 2023

Dates for your diary
Sunday 10 September - Open Day
Friday 15 September - The Centre Presents Talk
Friday 22 September - Last day of Term
Monday 9 October - New Term starts

Open Day is here at last!

After weeks of preparation, everyone is eager for the day to start. Let's hope for some sunshine, lots of visitors and fun for everyone. Enjoy the break and the wildflowers and we look forward to catching up again at the beginning of Term 4.

Val - Editor

From the Executive...

I hope everyone is excited about Open Day because I am. I am always amazed at the talent that this Centre germinates.

Bill has fine-tuned the day with plans, maps, instructions and ideas. Michelle and Zoe have the lunches sorted with delicious home-made soups, cakes, biscuits, sandwiches and slices, so please get your snacks or meals from the café.

As you are possibly aware, we are involved with Containers for Change. Please collect your recyclable containers and take them to the various depots around the city with our number attached, C11044919. This will help raise more funds for your KCLC. We are hoping to get a bin here so you will be able to drop off your cans and bottles at the Centre, but not yet.

This will be the last Centre Talk for the term as the next one would have fallen in the first week of the holidays. The next edition will be sent out just before the beginning of Term 4.

I hope you heard the Radio talk on Monday afternoon on KCR. Anne-Marie and I (Bridget) were interviewed about the Centre by Julie from Kalamunda Community Radio. We hope we were able to give it the kudos it deserves. Julie was very encouraging and made sure we didn’t put in too many “Ummms” and “Ahhhs”.

We hope you enjoy the Open Day and have a relaxing break before coming back to the Centre on the 9th October.

Your Coordinators - Bridget with Annie and Anne-Marie

Open Day is here...

Kalamunda Community Learning Centre will be opening its doors tomorrow (Sunday 10 September) between 10am and 4pm for its much-anticipated Open Day. Admission is free and everyone is invited!

The Open Day is the opportunity for students and tutors from the Centre to showcase the work from their classes to enthral and inspire.

There will be entertainment from one of our ukulele groups, tai chi demonstrations and chess displays along with a second-hand book stall, raffles, home-made produce, crafts, a plant stall and refreshments available to purchase from the Cafe.

This is a great opportunity to invite your friends and family to come and have a look at what Kalamunda Community Learning Centre offers.

We are still short of a few volunteers!!

If you have a couple of hours to spare on Sunday morning and can assist with the car parking duties from 9.30am to 11am, please call Bill as soon as possible on 0403 934 165.

Please can we also request that if you are coming to the Open Day that you car pool and share lifts with friends and family as car parking will be limited. Thank you!

Our Members

Click here to see the range of locations our members hale from and click on each pin to see how many members come from each location.

Safety Matters...

Did you know that we have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at the Centre? This useful, but slightly scary, piece of equipment lives in the Reception area.

We offered members the chance earlier in the semester to see a video and to have a look at the AED. If you missed out on the video and would like to see it from the comfort of you own home, please click here to view the YouTube video.

If you would like more opportunities to see the video and the AED, then please let one of the Coordinators know.

The Display Cabinet...

Pins and Needles

Pins and Needles commenced over 20 years ago as “Smocking and Embroidery” with ages ranging from 20 to 92. We have not only shared, created and enjoyed each other's company but, under the tutelage of Anne Bell, have made smocked dresses for premature babies, had ‘Big Morning Teas’ to raise money for cancer research, made brooches to raise the plight of Koalas and have embroidered baby clothes to send to regional communities to name a few. The class has evolved today into all sorts of hand crafts.

News from the classes...

The Creche

The children have worked very hard this term with their beautiful Fathers' Day presents.

Debra
(Maybe there's a budding Picasso or Monet in this group. Some very lucky dads may have received their artwork. Ed.)

Kalamunda Hikers

Fresh air, great views, sunshine (mostly...), colours of the wild flowers, wedgetail eagles circling overhead, good company. All this AND exercise as well.

What's not to like about the KCLC Hikers?

A friendly group of fellow walkers getting together for a couple of hours in the hills on Thursday mornings.

The Joke...

On his death bed, a miser said to his wife, "Promise me that when I die you will put all my money in the coffin with me, because I want to have it with me in the afterlife". She did so, and soon after, he died.

During the funeral service his wife sat beside her best friend in whom she had confided her promise to her husband.

After the ceremony and just before the undertakers closed the coffin, the wife said, "Wait!" She then placed a box in the coffin. The undertakers locked the casket and they rolled it away.

The friend said, "Myrtle surely you weren't foolish enough to put all your money in there with your husband".

Myrtle replied, "I'm a faithful Catholic, so I cannot go back on my word. I promised him that I was going to do so and I did. I got it all together, put it into my account, and wrote him a cheque...
if he can cash it, then he can spend it".
The Quiz...

The food related titles below of 5 films have had all their vowels removed and the spaces between the remaining letters altered. Can you work out what the 5 movies are?
