From the Executive...

Canada was amazing, Scotland was wet and Thailand was wetter! I am back and have found that the Centre has been run efficiently while I have been away, which goes to show that I am not as important as I hoped I was.

Well done to the amazing team who got everyone enrolled and into their appropriate classes at the appropriate times, with not too much trouble.

Needless to say, there are a few housekeeping issues that need to be brought to everyone’s attention and a couple of them are urgent. One is that we need a successor for Bill as Open Day organiser. The reason that this is so urgent is because he is keen to show this person what happens at this Open Day which is only two weeks away on the 10th September. If you think you might like to take it on, then please come and see someone at the desk or the office.

The second one is our Workgroup Leader Pam, who is leaving at the end of the year and, like Bill, would like to explain what it entails to the person taking over from her. She has fine-tuned it and made it as clear as possible.

Regarding Open Day, please do not bring in books any earlier than the 4th of September as we do not have room to store them.

I have had a special request from our very hard-working receptionists - please try not to bring in $50 notes. They have a very limited float and find the large notes can be very difficult to change.

While I didn’t go to the ‘Centre Presents’ talk, I have heard that it was fascinating and well attended.

I look forward to seeing you in the Centre next week.

Your Coordinators - Bridget with Annie and Anne-Marie

Another reminder about Open Day...

Kalamunda Community Learning Centre will be opening its doors between 10am and 4pm on Sunday 10 September for its much-anticipated Open Day. Admission is free and everyone is invited!

The Open Day is the opportunity for students and tutors from the Centre to showcase the work from their classes to enthral and inspire.

There will also be a second hand book stall, entertainment from one of our ukulele groups, tai chi demonstration and chess display, raffles, homemade produce, crafts and plant stall and refreshments available to purchase from the cafe.

This is a great opportunity to invite your friends and family to come and have a look at what Kalamunda Community Learning Centre offers.

Book stall

Members can start bringing in their book donations from Monday 4 September. Please don't bring them in any earlier as we won't have room to store them.

Market and Exchange products

Members with any homegrown plants or produce or home/class made crafts to sell on the day, can now register at the Desk where you will be given a seller number to use on all your goods. Sellers also need to price their own crafts, plants, fruits and foods (which must be labelled with ingredients and produced in an approved kitchen). 10% of all sales on the day will go to the Centre. Goods need to be brought in on Saturday 9 September between 10.30am and 2pm or Sunday between 8.30am and 9.30am. Any unsold items need to be picked up at 4pm on the Sunday.

Over twenty-five of us attended The Centre Presents in the Main Hall last Friday where Mary Jo Ellis stepped us through the S.C.A.R.F. model.

With a lot of fun and enthusiasm, Mary Jo explained how the brain reacts to real and perceived threats in everyday life. We then explored the Social Domains of human social experience – Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness and Fairness, the key components involved.

It was a very entertaining afternoon and resulted in some interesting discussions over afternoon tea. Thanks to our catering and set up folk and to Kathryn for organising the event.

Our next Speaker Series presentation on Friday, 15 September looks to be equally interesting, especially if you enjoy art history. Elton will be providing an entertaining and informative presentation as he examines William Hogarth “The Cockney Artist”, the artist who, as a painter and engraver, found inspiration in the popular culture of 18th-century London and whose work was viewed by a mass audience in the form of prints hung in coffee shops, workshops and the homes of the rising middle class.

Hogarth's art, described as "comic history paintings", are a distinctive British contribution to European art in the sleazy way they capture the highs and lows of contemporary London life...many carrying a strong moral message against all the surrounding vices.

Please book and pay for your tickets for this event at the reception desk. Unfortunately tickets are no longer available online for these events.

The Display Cabinet...

Chess

Today, Chess is one of the world's most popular games played by millions of people worldwide.

Chess is an ideal way to keep the mind active and is enjoyed by men and women of all ages.

The chess group has provided an interesting display of different chess pieces and boards used, together with books and information about the game.

News from the classes...

Move aside Backstreet Boys, here are the Friday morning gents from Uke-A-Roos!

The Friday morning classes are always very lively, lots of fun and lots of friendly encouragement to get up and have a go on the mic!

Thanks to Bonnie for keeping us all in order and to Des for stepping up when Bonnie is away.

The Joke...

Exercise for people over 40

Start by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room on each side.

With a 1 kilo potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.

Each day you will find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.

After a couple of weeks, move up to 5 kilo potato bags.

Then try 25 kilo potato bags and then eventually, try to lift a 30 kilo potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute.

After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.
