Becoming a tutor

Kalamunda Community Learning Centre (KCLC) runs approximately 80 classes every semester led by 65 tutors who together share their enthusiasm and knowledge (free of charge!) to over 650 members.

The Centre’s teaching year is split into two semesters and each semester into two terms. Classes are held mornings and afternoons five days a week during each term. Morning sessions run from 9.45am to 11.45am and afternoon sessions from 12.45pm to 2.45pm. Several book clubs also meet in the evening.

Who are the tutors at KCLC?

Our tutors come from a variety of professional and non-professional backgrounds, but every single one has a love of learning and a passion for their area of expertise. All our tutors are volunteers, just like every one of our members who assist in some way to keep the vibrant community at the Kalamunda Community Learning Centre flourishing. We value the skills of our tutors and are extremely grateful to them for providing classes for our members.

Why do people tutor at KCLC?

You may have a passion for a subject or want to share your skills and expertise. Being a tutor is a great way to meet people from all ages and backgrounds. Our tutors have the satisfaction of seeing people develop their skills and confidence. Tutors not only share their skills but learn from their students. Our community is warm and welcoming, and a great place to make new friendships and extend your social networks.

Do tutors get any kinds of rewards?

Although all tutors volunteer their time, KCLC does recognise their valuable time and skills in the following ways:

• Each tutor is provided with a coupon to the value of the course that they teach, which is allocated at the end of the Semester. The coupon is valid for two years and is transferrable, so you can use it to subsidise a future course that you might like to attend yourself or gift it to a friend.
• Tutors receive free membership to KCLC and are not required to enrol in a workgroup.
• All tutors are invited to an annual Thank You Dinner to acknowledge their efforts over the year. It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet other tutors and generally let your hair down and have some fun after a busy year teaching!

What sort of facilities are available?

Kalamunda Community Centre is located in Jorgensen Park, Crescent Road, which is off Mundaring Weir Road. It is purpose built to provide for the needs of community organisations, such as KCLC. There are six classrooms, including a craft room, creche, large hall, kitchen and accessible toilet all on one level. Parking is free and includes parking bays for people with disabilities near the western access door.

How do I become a tutor at KCLC?

Interested in becoming a tutor at KCLC? Please complete the New Tutor and Course Information Form.  The programmer will contact you when your form has been reviewed. We also request that you provide an image, if possible, that will represent your course to be used to accompany your course description online. This can be emailed directly to programmer@kclc.org.au.
