The Coordinators' report remind us that there are evacuation drills in the coming week. Tutors please remember you are the last to leave🙄. Registrar Bronwyn reminds us of the Gift Certificates available for purchase.

There is a reminder to reserve your seat for the first Speaker Spot of 2026, that the AGM is coming up and information about a Social Niceties book for acknowledging members for a variety of reasons.

The artistic side of KCLC members dominates the class news while Michael gives us a potted history of Tai Chi at the Centre.

From the Coordinators...

Week 3 Update

We are already in Week 3 of term, and it is wonderful to see classes well underway and everyone settling into their routines.

A reminder that evacuation drills will commence on Monday 4th May. Please make sure you are familiar with the procedures so we can ensure everyone’s safety.
  • Class secretaries should already have read out the relevant information to their classes.
  • Please mark rolls as early as possible, as drills may occur early in the class (e.g., 10 am or 1 pm).
The KCLC website (https://kalamundalearningcentre.org.au) is a valuable resource for all members. You will find information on policies, the Members’ Handbook, course programmes and timetables, as well as past newsletters. It is also a helpful place to check enrolments, semester dates and Centre updates.

As a volunteer-run organisation, the Centre relies on members contributing their time each semester through work groups. If you have not already signed up for a workgroup, please do so as your involvement helps keep the Centre running smoothly and supports the strong sense of community that makes KCLC so special.

We look forward to seeing you around the Centre over the coming weeks. Wishing everyone a wonderful and rewarding term ahead.

Housekeeping

While donations are appreciated, not all items can be repurposed.
Please ring reception or send an email with images to reception1@kclc.org.au before bringing in anything!

We have limited storage and find the office becomes cluttered.

Speaker Spot back in the Spotlight…

Speaker Spot (formerly The Centre Presents) is back! Join us on Friday 19 June as Donna West presents 'Surviving a Lifequake’.

As with an earthquake, a lifequake (a traumatic life event) creates havoc and destruction.

Donna will share how she transformed from experiencing panic attacks due to an extended workplace-related lifequake to building up her own resilience and courage to stand up for herself. She will also share tools and strategies that can help you to survive your own lifequake.
Date: Friday 19 June 2026.
Time: 12.45pm to 2.45pm.
Location: Kalamunda Community Centre Hall.
Cost: $5 per person (includes afternoon tea).
Booking: To reserve your seat, please book and pay at the KCLC Reception.
Booking deadline: Wednesday 17 June unless sold out prior.
Speaker Spot is a series of one-off special talks that anyone, members and non-members, are welcome to attend!

Social Niceties...

Do you know someone who deserves acknowledgement from the Learning Centre?
We have the facility to send a Condolence, Get Well, Thank you or Congratulation.
There is a 'Social Niceties' book in the Reception Office for recording such occasions.

Please feel free to add to it, with the relevant information.

(Remember that current Classes usually organize their own messages when applicable.)

Thanks,
Beth Johnston.

Class News...

Watercolour
Monday PM
At the final class of Term 1 on 30th March, Averil, one of our talented tutors, gave us a workshop on the art of Painting Rocks (image to the right).

We, the class participants, gain lots of inspiration and hopefully learn some skills, from these demonstrations.
There are numerous techniques, producing different effects and we are very grateful to Averil.

We are also ably tutored by Beth, who has a different style of painting. Beth took most of the photos on the day, with our thanks.

Our paintings are an opportunity to express ourselves as the individuals that we are.

Today, we happily participated in our 1st class of Term 2, but missed Helna, our secretary, who is in the Netherlands following the passing of her Mother. We offer Helena our sympathies.

Lots of water and lots of pigment on your brush, is Averil’s advice to enjoy Water Colour Painting.

Go Paints!

Tai Chi

Wednesday and Friday AM
A History of KCLC Tai Chi

Tai Chi has always been - and still is - a popular course at The Kalamunda Community Learning Centre. Margaret Radice and Ingrid Stone are two of the surviving members of the first Classes starting almost 20 years ago. They have kindly offered some of their reminiscences – and of course – they still regularly practice Tai Chi today thanks to the skill and guidance of Tom!
Margaret recalls that the first instructor was a lady named Pratho-Jones. Classes began in 2007 sometimes practicing outdoors. She said that when everyone moved as one it was an exquisite feeling. After two terms Pratho retired and Tom Lustig became the next tutor.
Tom's background was in Kung Fu and he used the old lounge area in the original KCLC site. He found this too noisy and moved to what used to be the old kindergarten, opposite the Post Office, later moving to the Senior Citizens Centre (the Jack Healey building).

When Tom started he was recalling Tai Chi moves from decades past when he ran a Kung Fu Dojo in Chile. Tom had worked in many unrelated areas since and so was still working out our programme during class. He sometimes became so carried away with getting the footwork correct that he would spend half an hour on one move until a voice asked “could we try the other foot please?”

Tom was a very competent and graceful performer. Always a pleasure to watch while he demonstrated a flowing sequence of moves from the 'Set'
Ingrid Stone remembers the first term with Tom, it was a full class of (at least) 15 and we were all eager to learn.

Tom was still working out a programme when we started and talked at length explaining the importance of the moves and of doing them properly. He tended to work one side for extended periods focusing on the how to, seemingly regardless of our discomfort!

Michael Jefferson
Mixed Media Painting Workshop
Wednesday AM
I first discovered the Kalamunda Learning Centre through a good friend, as I was keen to reconnect with my love of art. I began with drawing classes led by David Thornton, which I really enjoyed, but I still felt drawn back to painting—my first love.
I joined the mixed media class on a Wednesday morning and quickly found myself wanting more, so I stayed on for the afternoon sessions as well. Since then, I’ve loved being part of such a creative group, guided by our talented tutor, Steve Keeley.
Steve brings a wealth of knowledge, not only in art techniques but also in art history, and he generously shares this with the class. Alongside his expertise, he has an easy-going teaching style, sprinkled with humour and friendly banter, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for everyone.

Throughout the term, we explored both landscape and abstract painting under Steve’s guidance. Our group includes artists of all experience levels—beginners, those developing their skills, and more experienced painters. What unites us is a shared passion for creativity, whether working with oils, acrylics, watercolours, pencil, pastel, or collage—we all simply enjoy giving it a go.
We are also fortunate to share our space with the Silversmithing Workshop and together, our groups create a vibrant, inspiring environment—complete with wonderful morning teas and a true sense of community.
If you’re looking to explore your creativity in a supportive and enjoyable setting, we would love you to come along and join us.
