Welcome...

Welcome back after an Easter break. This edition of Centre Talk (CT) includes the report from the Coordinators; which includes KCLC presence at the Kalamunda Show, an AGM reminder and the upcoming emergency evacuation drills. Registrar Bronwyn gives an update of courses still available that have vacancies, both those starting in Term 2 and some continuing from Term 1. She also has a request for new tutors and courses, so if you have a passion and want to share it, now is your opportunity.

Special talks are back with the first on 19th June. Now called Speaker Spot, Donna West presents 'Surviving a Lifequake'. Mary reports of the progress of Cash for Cans where fundraising and saving the environment meet. This segues into one of my favourite Open Day exhibitions 'Scrap to Sculpture', which along with 'Projects in Progress' are the class reports both reflecting the creativity within KCLC members.

Enjoy Term 2; the friends, activities and stretching your grey matter!!!

From the Coordinators...

Welcome back to Term 2
We hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable break and is feeling refreshed for the term ahead.

Kalamunda Show
Over the break, KCLC hosted a stall at the Kalamunda Show, which proved to be a fantastic day for the Centre. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with members of the Community, share information about KCLC and showcase what we do.
We were also delighted to speak with several prospective tutors interested in offering new classes, opening up exciting opportunities for the future.

A big thank you to the volunteers who gave their time and support to make the day such a success. We are already looking forward to an even bigger and better event next year.
Upcoming Annual General Meeting

KCLC members are advised that the Annual General Meeting will be held on:
Friday, 5 June 2026
All Executive positions will become vacant on this date.
Positions include:
• Principal Coordinator
• Two Coordinators
• Secretary
• Treasurer
• Four Ordinary Committee Members - two roles currently undertaken within these positions include:
• Registrar
• Work, Health and Safety Officer

This means there are further opportunities for members to get involved.

We encourage both newer members (with at least 12 months membership) and more experienced members to consider nominating. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the day-to-day running of the Centre, share ideas, and support future projects.

Nomination forms will be available at reception.

Nominations close: Friday 8 May 2026.

Work, Health and Safety
Emergency evacuation drills are planned during the week commencing 4 May. Further details will be provided closer to the date.

We wish all our members an enjoyable and rewarding term ahead and encourage you to make the most of the opportunities to socialise and connect with others.

KCLC Coordinators

Semester Two Planning – New Courses?
Yes, we are already preparing for semester two! If you have been thinking about putting your hand up to offer a new course, I would love to hear from you. Maybe you know someone who is able and willing to become a part of our vibrant team of tutors, please encourage them to make contact. Details about becoming a tutor are available via this link Tutors - Kalamunda Community Learning Centre or if you would just like to chat about your idea, please contact me: registrar@kclc.org.au

Speaker Spot back in the Spotlight…

Speaker Spot (formerly The Centre Presents) is back! Join us on Friday 19 June as Donna West presents 'Surviving a Lifequake’.

As with an earthquake, a lifequake (a traumatic life event) creates havoc and destruction.

Donna will share how she transformed from experiencing panic attacks due to an extended workplace-related lifequake to building up her own resilience and courage to stand up for herself. She will also share tools and strategies that can help you to survive your own lifequake.
Date: Friday 19 June 2026.
Time: 12.45pm to 2.45pm.
Location: Kalamunda Community Centre Hall.
Cost: $5 per person (includes afternoon tea).
Booking: To reserve your seat, please book and pay at the KCLC Reception.
Booking deadline: Wednesday 17 June unless sold out prior.
Speaker Spot is a series of one-off special talks that anyone, members and non-members, are welcome to attend!

Class News...

Projects in Progress
Friday PM
Projects in Progress, or PiPs for short, is a self-governed class where each class member works on their own current project in progress.

We are currently a full class of 10 members. Our class consists of members completing embroidery, knitting, decoupage and calligraphy projects. We are happy to report we had our first completed embroidery project for the year - the stunning gold and red butterfly.

Whilst we are all busily working on our projects we chat about a myriad of topics and look forward to attempting to complete the Quiz provided in the West Australian newspaper.
Sometimes we are a very clever lot, other times not so much ............

We are a very cheerful and social class and members look forward to getting together on Friday afternoons.

Scrap to Sculpture

Monday AM
Our class focus is about transforming waste to art, by repurposing materials that would normally be discarded, transforming into new artworks.

It is always amazing to see the interesting creations made by class members from recycled materials.

Our first project for the year, was to utilise an old paintbrush or brush to create a sculpture.

Although at first daunted by such a challenge, the members of the class have used their cognitive abilities to make some very different and creative items.

As you can see from the photos, the sculptors have found some innovative ways to incorporate not only an old brush, but also other recycled elements into their work.
By using discarded materials, sculptors not only reduce waste but also encourage dialogue about sustainability.

Fundraising for the Centre and Saving the Environment...

Kalamunda Community Learning Centre has been part of the Containers For Change Scheme for 2.5 years, raising over $1000 for the Learning Centre and saving over 15,000 containers from going to landfill.

The Centre has put these funds towards a new bench (made by the Lesmurdie Men’s Shed) and a Positive Grid Spark Edge Portable Smart Amp and PA System, including a microphone and stand (this will be available for tutors needing to amplify their instruments or voices - please see Mary for more information).
A workgroup has been set up for volunteers to take the full bags of containers to the various depots and recycling stations.

If you would like to donate your cans and bottles, the green bin is located in the Craft Room courtyard at the front of the Kalamunda Community Learning Centre building. Green bags are also available to take home and fill.

Our organisation’s member number is C11044919.
