From the Coordinators...

Wishing all our KCLC members and their families a very happy Easter! As this is our final newsletter for the term, we wish you a relaxing and enjoyable break and look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for another exciting term ahead!

Save the date for our first 2026 Speaker Spot, where Donna West will present Surviving a Lifequake on the afternoon of Friday 19 June. More details will be shared in the next edition of Centre Talk, with bookings opening on Monday 20 April. Speaker Spot is our series of special talks that anyone can attend. The series was previously known as The Centre Presents but has been renamed to avoid confusion with our newsletter, Centre Talk.

See below the Coordinators’ Report presented to the General Meeting held on Friday, 27th March 2026

Coordinators’ Report

Introduction

This report provides an update on the Centre’s operations, programs, and community engagement activities since the last General Meeting. It highlights key achievements, ongoing initiatives, and areas of focus, particularly in relation to member participation, community engagement, and the safe and effective operation of the Centre. The report reflects the Centre’s commitment to providing a welcoming, engaging, and safe environment for all members and visitors.

Key Updates and Activities

Tutors’ Thank You Dinner

The Tutors’ Thank You Dinner was a very successful evening, providing an excellent opportunity to recognise and celebrate the dedication and contribution of our tutors.

Summer in the Centre

The Summer in the Centre program was well attended, providing a relaxed environment where members could participate as they wished and engage in activities of their choice.

Planned Advertisements and Community Engagement

Plans are in place to advertise in Have a Go News to raise awareness of upcoming events and programs and engage the wider community.

Jorgensen Park Submission

A submission regarding Jorgensen Park was presented to the City of Kalamunda (COK). COK staff met with the Executive Committee to discuss KCLC’s concerns around parking and safe access to the Centre for members.

Kalamunda Show Participation

The Centre will have a stall at the Kalamunda Show on Saturday, 11th April, providing an excellent opportunity to connect with the community, share information about our classes, and promote upcoming activities.

Speaker Spot Program

Speaker Spot has resumed successfully, with the first session booked for Friday, 19th June 2026. Donna West will present a session titled “Surviving a Life Quake,” continuing to provide valuable learning and engagement opportunities for members.

Health, Safety, and Operational Readiness

All required safety equipment has been tested and tagged at a cost of $600, ensuring compliance and safe use. An issue previously identified with the crèche playground gate has now been addressed, with a key sourced to ensure safe and reliable access, supporting evacuation procedures in the event of an emergency. The WHS Committee has maintained regular safety checks.

Volunteer Support

The Centre is currently seeking additional volunteer support for all positions. Members are encouraged to contribute where possible, with training and support provided to all volunteers.

Conclusion

Overall, the Centre continues to thrive through member engagement, active participation in programs, and volunteer contributions. Continued support and involvement from members are essential to ensure the Centre meets the needs of the community.

Centre Lunch...

Thank you to everyone who attended the first Centre Lunch of 2026. It was a wonderful gathering filled with great food, laughter, and a strong sense of camaraderie among members. A special thank you as well to those who kindly agreed to be filmed by our member Jessica, who is creating a short promotional video for the Centre Lunches.
We would love to see even more members join us at future lunches, and we hope this video will offer a glimpse of the warm, welcoming atmosphere and encourage others to come along next time. The next Centre lunch will be on Friday 22 May, so look out for the video closer to the time!

Write Your Life Story
Wednesday AM
The latest published author in this very popular Kalamunda Community Learning Centre course is Richard Rees with his book titled “The Memories of a Prawn Trawler Skipper”. Richard has entertained us with his hair raising anecdotes about life on the sea.

Not satisfied with one book, he is now writing a second book outlining his further adventurers as a trawler skipper as well as his travels around the world on a motorbike.

Mums or Dads' Free Time

Thursday PM

I am a parent who attends Mums or Dads' Free Time on Thursdays while my 1-year-old son, Alastair, attends crèche here at KCLC.

I have used some of that free time to work on my piece "Avon River Dreaming", which will be on display at the Annual Beverley Art Exhibition (April 2nd - 12th).
I identify and am recognised as aboriginal due to my heritage. This artwork depicts the landscape of my first home (Balladong Booja). The pulse of the place that shaped the early parts of myself and where people I love live.

Thank you KCLC creche volunteers for giving myself and other parents the opportunity to spend a little time on projects for joy.

Avon River Dreaming

This piece depicts the waterway between Beverley and York, WA. The Avon River flows through Beverley (right) through Gwambygine (central meeting place), past the hill that cries, where the rainbow serpents' path is carved into the hill, and into York. The sun illuminates the crops for which the region is known.

Jessica Williams
The Art of Classical Mosaics
Tuesday PM

Judy Jackson, our tutor, has taught this group the basic rules and design parameters for mosaic art used through millenia.

I have enjoyed doing mosaic artwork for many years and feel this new, or rather ancient style has given me a better understanding of how mosaics can work, opening doors to explore and incorporate in future mosaic projects.

A very interesting and informative course. It would be great if there was a follow up course delving into more complex mosaic design in this style.
