Welcome...
This edition of Centre Talk includes the KCLC Executive response to the City of Kalamunda's proposal for Jorgensen Park and what has been accomplished to ensure the health & safety of members while attending the KCLC. There is a reminder about the upcoming general meeting that all member are encouraged to attend as it is one avenue to provide feedback about your KCLC experience and offer suggestions for future directions.
John offers a decorative pillar to anyone interested in repurposing this artefact and keeping a piece of KCLC history. Perhaps as part of a garden?
Registrar Bronwyn has a reminder of courses are available for Term 2, for those who are still deciding on what mind-expanding pursuit to undertake next. Katherine has news about the success of the crèche, Mad Mabel has been found while singing, ukulele and bread are the themes reflected in the Class Reports.
There is lost property to be collected-where the colour blue dominates and the 125th Kalamunda Show has sent information for members who want to participate/volunteer.
Look out for the photos from last Friday's Centre Lunch in the next edition of Centre Talk. Thank you to all those who came along.
This edition is going out on the Ides of March, the date of Julius Caesar's assassination (44 BCE), where the ambitions of one man, and the fears of many collided - sound familiar. It reminds us that power often rests on fragile agreements and that societies today still wrestle with questions of leadership, accountability, and the balance between authority and the common good. It is a reminder that communities flourish where trust, goodwill, and open conversation are valued. The health of any society - large or small-depends not just on leaders, but on the everyday respect and care people show one another.

From the Executive...
What has been happening at the Centre....
The past two weeks have certainly been much busier than the first two weeks of the term, with several matters requiring significant attention.
One unexpected development has been the City of Kalamunda’s proposed lease of Jorgensen Park. This proposal has raised important concerns for our Centre and its members.
Please be assured that the Executive Committee has been working diligently on this matter. We have been in contact with City of Kalamunda councillors to ensure our concerns are clearly communicated. In addition, we have arranged a meeting with a City of Kalamunda staff member to discuss our major concerns in person and seek further clarification on the proposal.
We hope that everyone who wished to provide input has submitted their feedback to the City of Kalamunda regarding the proposed lease. Community input is an important part of the process, and your submissions help ensure the Centre’s voice is heard. For now, we will need to wait and see how the situation develops following the consultation period and discussions with the City.
The Work, Health & Safety (WHS) Committee has been working very hard behind the scenes. Every item used at the Centre is regularly checked to ensure safety for all members and visitors. To date,120 items have been tested and tagged. While this is a significant expense, it is an essential task to ensure everything is safe for use.
We have also sourced a key for the crèche playground gate. When using the crèche, please remember to take the playground gate key with you so you can unlock the gate if necessary.
One of the most important items the WHS committee regularly checks is the defibrillator. Members can be assured that it has been checked and is in good working order. Thankfully, it hasn’t been needed, but reassuring to know it’s ready if required.
Volunteers Needed We urgently need volunteers to assist at reception. Even a small amount of time can make a significant difference. Please speak with someone at reception if you would like to get involved, training will be provided and full support is available.
Upcoming General Meeting – 27th March Don’t forget we have a General Meeting scheduled for Friday, 27th March 12:00hrs. We would love to see you there.
These meetings are an important way for members to stay informed about Centre activities, provide feedback, and contribute to decisions that affect our members. Your input helps shape the future direction of the Centre.
And finally… thank you to all members for your ongoing support and engagement. Staying informed, providing feedback, and attending meetings ensures the Centre continues to operate effectively and meet the needs of its members.
Message from John.... The remains of the decorative pillar that once graced the entrance to the old KCLC is languishing in the rubbish bin lockup area behind the kitchen. It is creating a safety issue and needs a new home. I sincerely doubt we will ever be able to restore it. We would need COK approval, and in my opinion, it would also be an expensive engineering problem to reinstall it anywhere in a public space.
Is there any member interested in this as a private artefact? You will need some machinery and a lot of strong young men to shift it. Unfortunately, if it cannot find a new home it will ultimately be disposed of. Please contact any Executive committee member via the KCLC office if you wish to pursue this. John Paskulich Coordinator

Current courses going on sale:
From the 23rd of March we will be placing courses which commenced this term but still have vacancies on sale for a Term 2 commencement. We’re back! We have welcomed one new little boy (just walking) to the creche and expect a baby girl to start attending in second term. That will bring our weekly attendance to four, which is a comfortable number for us volunteer minders to manage.

Water play has been a source of great fun for everyone these hot mornings, and is an activity that all of the children can enjoy - and learn from - at their different ages and developmental levels.
Meanwhile, their mothers have two wonderful uninterrupted hours to follow their own pursuits at the Centre – those members who have “been there” will understand how much this means.
There are still some vacancies on the creche workgroup roster, so a couple more volunteers would be very much appreciated. Details are on the creche workgroup sign-up page. A receipt from having applied for a Working with Children Check Card is acceptable in the interim, while waiting for your card to arrive. You can start straight away!
It has been great to see familiar names from last year on the sign-up sheet, and very encouraging that there are also members new to the workgroup - who I look forward to meeting.
Thank you all. Katherine, Creche Organiser

Mad Mabel is back!
Delighted to report that Mad Mabel (the missing book club book) has been returned to the Centre.
Mabel has now been confined to the book club cupboard and will only be released under strict supervision.
Sounds like that fits in with Mad Mabel herself!! (Editor)

Sing Your Heart Out– A Wonderful Start to the New Term
Sing Your Heart Out has begun the new term at Kalamunda Learning Centre on a high note, with 34 members enrolled. It’s been lovely to see so many familiar faces returning, and we are especially delighted to welcome several new members into our warm and supportive singing community.
We are incredibly fortunate to have Jo Randell as our tutor. Jo founded SYHO almost thirty years ago, and her passion for music remains as vibrant as ever. Her enthusiasm is truly infectious, inspiring confidence and bringing out the very best in each of us.
Whether we are learning new harmonies, polishing old favourites, or simply enjoying the joy of singing together, Jo’s guidance ensures every session is uplifting and rewarding.
As the term unfolds, we look forward to sharing music, laughter and friendship — and, of course, singing our hearts out!

Strumming Through Term One
It has been a fantastic start to the year for our Wednesday morning ukulele group! We’ve hit the ground running, keeping the music playing with a major emphasis on the ‘fun’ part of our sessions.
The group continues to thrive as a cooperative circle under Roger’s leadership. Everyone has been pitching in to suggest new songs for our repertoire, and we have kept it simple, beginning with two and three-chord songs to encourage our beginners. It’s been great to see the collective support and spirit as we’ve mastered new chords and harmonies together over the last few weeks.
What’s new? For those who prefer to manage their song sheets on a device, we are introducing digital sheets this term; great for organising and viewing our music at a touch.
We’re having fun singing our way through the term and can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store for us!

Breadmaking
This term's bread makers were off to a fine start on Week 1, learning the tricky skill of kneading bread dough without flour and discovering how a sticky, shaggy dough can turn into a smooth pliable ball of dough within 6 minutes. We then experimented with shaping this white dough into six different bread roll shapes.
Week 2 we moved to a half and half wholemeal/white dough, noting the different texture and learning how to roll and shape plaited loaves ... perfect for transforming into a quick garlic bread to accompany a meal.
As we wait an hour for the first proving everyone gets to see and taste what we're creating. I prepare the current recipe in the morning at home to bake in the Learning Centre oven when we arrive for class. We also get to chat about the myths and truths of bread making and I endeavour to answer any and all questions.
Our menu for the rest of the term includes a daily loaf of bread, focaccia, hot cross buns, a very buttery/cheesy garlic bread and cinnamon scrolls.
There will be more delicious aromas and flavours coming from the Learning Centre kitchen in the coming weeks.

Please note that submissions for Centre Talk should be emailed to Centre_Talk@kclc.org.au. An email, acknowledging receipt of your contribution, will be sent.
