Welcome...
Welcome back to Semester Two at the KCLC.
The first Centre Talk for Semester Two includes information for your safety- both driving into KCLC and in the event of a fire from the Executive. Registrar, Brownyn, has two 'bites of the cherry' with a roundup of enrolment week and and then her semi-regular Q&A. There is notice of an up-coming Centre Lunch, wine, food and great company, and class reports from Semester One reflect the variety, member passions and reasons why the KCLC is so popular.
Hope you all enjoy Semester Two.

This saying has been rattling around in my brain recently but, given the choice of classes at the KCLC, then maybe you can๐ค? I hope you all enjoy, and submerge yourselves, in whatever class has taken your fancy as we start Semester Two and it brings joy, laughter and great food๐ง๐ซโ!!

Car Park Care
Welcome to the start of a new semester!
We would like to ask all our members to please drive slowly and be cautious when entering and exiting the car parks at KCLC. The direction arrows have been repainted and changed in some places.
We still exit and enter as before.

๐ฅFire or threat: Evacuation procedure๐ฅ
Check the evacuation path diagram on wall and locations of assembly areas.
- Assist anyone disabled or hurt. Wheel chair is located in reception if needed.
- You may take personal valuables with you. Leave equipment, drinks etc. behind.
- Leave the building by the nearest marked safety exit in an orderly manner (see below).
Assemble in the area designated by the Warden. If the threat is in east of building (e.g. kitchen) assemble WEST (disabled) carpark (see below).
If the threat is in west of building (e.g. craft room) assemble EAST (playground) carpark (see below).
- Stay in CLASS group.
- Secretary takes roll. Answer “PRESENT” - Loud and Clear.
- Secretary reports to Fire Warden.
- REMAIN at Assembly Area until given “all clear” or other instructions.
Do NOT go to your vehicle ๐ and drive away as it impedes emergency vehicles.
If there is a bush fire alert, centre will close and you will leave in a safe and orderly way. If bushfire too close to leave. Stay in the building. Emergency services will help you.

Enrolments
Despite a few hiccups initially, due to the large number of enthusiastic members hitting the website at once, enrolments for Semester Two ran very smoothly. This is in large part due to the efforts of the enrolment team who generously give their time to make it all happen. The week was very capably managed by Sally McIlroy who is the Assistant Registrar. The in-person enrolling team, which was led by Caroline Badminton, assisted members with grace. Special mention also needs to made of Christine Wolstenholme, who once again assisted every day and doesn’t even attend classes!
We would like to offer a very warm welcome to the 95 new members who have joined us this semester. Please make sure they are well looked after. We now have over 840 members registered for 2025.
Please note that we do not accept late enrolments in the first two weeks. Our only exceptions are for new members or returning members under extenuating circumstances. In both of these cases a $10 administration fee is applied. From week three we accept late enrolments for any courses that have vacancies. The administration fee is not charged but the full course fee is applied. During the first two weeks, while courses are settling in, we do not accept visitors to classes.
If you find the course you enrolled in does not suit you, please visit me in the office within weeks one and two. If appropriate we can swap you to another course, or arrange a refund. Please note though that a refund can only be offered if you notify us within those first two weeks.
I wish you all a wonderful semester as you acquire new skills, knowledge and friendships.

The first Centre Lunch for Semester Two will be on Friday 22 August from 11.45am in the Main Hall. All members are invited, and no booking is required; simply bring a plate of food to share. It’s very relaxed and great fun getting to know other members as you enjoy the lunchtime offerings. See you there!

French Conversation
We meet every Tuesday with notre professeur Elizabeth, who guides us through a variety of exercises, to help our understanding and to improve our conversational skills.
We speak in French on all manner of topics, to express opinions and share information. We add new words and phrases to our vocabulary every time we meet.
We all love the beautiful French language and are keen to improve our language skills, just for fun, or sometimes to prepare for a visit to la belle France.

This group had a productive half year of 2025 of creative, unusual and amazing "scrapping" with objects. Our Tutor Marilyn Harries started off with demonstration how to make a wire figure model as a base.
The project was to make a lean body/torso/limbs. Lots of skinny folk appeared. We generally use wood off cuts, bush boughs, old chair legs, kitchenalia, discarded frames and bits of fabric, feathers, rusted metal, washers, wire, beads, and paint.
Voila!! there emerges an owl, giraffe, flying and creeping insects, flowers and wondrous results.
Our members are enthusiastic, have fun, share our materials and connect with chats and lively exchange over morning tea.

Calligraphy Skills & Projects
Calligraphy is essentially the art of creating beautiful lettering using pen, ink, brush or other writing instruments.
What a wonderful way to start each week!
Under the tutelage and guidance of Janelle, both newbies and experienced alike toil to create masterful pieces that inspire and bring lettering to life. During the two hours each week, heads are down, brows are furrowed and creations are planned and designed. These calligraphy pieces will be displayed at the KCLC Open Day in September and we are looking forward to sharing them with everyone.

If you need a brain stress break, then this group is the way to go.
My family is not free, or interested in playing board games anymore, so I joined with an open mind. Together, with three men, I joined in the game Trickster Scrabble, which I have never played. They were kind and patiently explained during the 1st game. I caught on and loved it. Then their competitive sides came out for the 2nd game, though still happy to explain if I really didn’t get something. All bets were off! I learnt much more as their competitive sides came out!
They were helpful with hints and tips for all new games but for the 1st, 2nd games only. Once I got the hang of each game the gloves were off, unless I did something glaring obvious. Explanations did follow ๐.
We always play games to suit our numbers. The more the merrier and laughs too! I’ve actually bought some of these games to play with family at home.
For those who are unsure, the class always finishes no later than 2.45pm sharp, so you do n’t need to worry about delays in the afternoon for school pickups.
Parking is accessible and plentiful, and a nice, clean and light filled room to ‘play’ in! See you semester Two!

Class News Semester Two
โ Please feel free to let us know anything interesting that you are up to in your Semester Two classes, even though we don't have any official class news reporters. Submissions can be emailed to centre_talk@kclc.org.au or written notes handed in to KCLC office.
This can be a class activity, or description, of what happens in the class (or tell us about your wonderful Tutor!). Make it succinct, around 150 words, give or take, and photos. These will be shared in Centre Talk when space permits.

Registrar's Rambles...
In this segment, I hope to address some FAQs and offer enrolment advice.

Workgroups: Why do I need to register for a workgroup?
Quite simply, our learning centre could not operate with its present price structure if members did not volunteer to assist in the running of the centre, nor would it continue to be the community hub it set out to be with everyone ‘learning through sharing’.
From the outset, Kalamunda Community Learning Centre has been based on a strong volunteer ethos with all tutors and community members contributing to making this a viable and vibrant centre.
We request that all members who are enrolled in any course as a ‘full-time’ class member register for one workgroup task, irrespective of the number of courses they attend. There are many tasks available for selection, covering a wide variety of interests, skills, activity levels and time commitment.
When members don’t register for a workgroup others need to fill the slack. Our hard-working Workgroup Manager also must spend frustrating hours following members up and finding people to fulfill important tasks.
If you have not yet registered for your workgroup please click here to check out the remaining options, or visit the Reception Desk for assistance.
