Welcome...

Hello to the first Term 4 edition of Centre Talk. I hope you have enjoyed your break with family, friends and travel.

This edition has the first instalment of 'Meet Your Executive', where over the next few editions you can read about your Executive. There is a call for new courses in 2026 from Registrar Bronwyn and the Knitting and Crochet group tell us the beanies and blankets that are donated to charity.

Editor's musings
Gardening is in the air. The weather has been great for getting out there to enjoy a bit of sun before it gets too fierce, decide what to plant this year and the never-ending battle with weeds. Just to enjoy the sound of birds, the flowers appearing on many endemic plants in the surrounding forests and the still occasional rain.
Whatever is your relaxation I hope you had a chance to enjoy a break and be refreshed for Term 4.
Marilyn, Editor

Meet your Executive...

Anne-Marie Botica

Coordinator KCLC

I grew up in the Perth Hills, where my family were orchardists in Pickering Brook.

I built a career in the corporate sector, beginning as Secretary to the Chairman of Wesfarmers Limited, Mr Harry Perkins and then Executive Assistant to the Managing Partner and General Manager of Mallesons Stephen Jacques. As part of my role at Mallesons, I also worked as an Internal Auditor and sat on the Governor’s Committee, helping to organise the annual Governor’s Prayer Group Breakfast.

After getting married, my husband and I embraced a tree change by moving to the southwest of WA, where we spent 20 years raising our three boys. During this time, I dedicated myself to volunteering in schools and sporting clubs while also working as a real estate agent.

When we returned to the Perth Hills I continued my community focus, working casually for the education department and now serving as a Coordinator at the Kalamunda Community Learning Centre.
I enjoy gardening and bushwalking with my husband, making the most of the beautiful natural surroundings and share the love of the outdoors with our mini schnauzer Monty. I live in a historic Gooseberry Hill homestead, once owned by Edward Peoples.

I’ve been part of the Learning Centre for nearly four years, and with both my parents also members, it truly feels like home. I love our community and feel privileged to give back through the Centre.

Roger Jennnings

Work, Health & Safety

I trained as a hospital biochemist in the British National Health Service where I began a life-long interest in computers. During the late 1970s and the 1980s I was responsible for the quality of equipment used in NHS laboratories and for the results produced.
In 1990 my late wife Lilian and I moved to Washington DC where I was Science Attaché in the British Embassy during the Bush, senior, and Clinton administrations.

After a brief spell back in the UK Government I took up the offer of a very early retirement and became a full-time volunteer. Lilian and I moved to Malta where we renovated a large 18th Century house and amongst other voluntary jobs ran an animal rescue charity.
Moving to Australia and Kalamunda 20 years ago I became actively involved with the National Trust of WA both as a volunteer at Mundaring Weir and on the Council. Ten years ago, I began broadcasting a classical music program on Kalamunda Community Radio and have eventually become Chair of the Board.

For the Learning Centre, Lilian and I taught courses on Family Tree research and in recent years I’ve taught courses on 20th Century classical music appreciation. I joined the Executive 2 years ago as Work Health and Safety Officer.

2026 Courses...

Yes! We are already in the planning phase for Semester One 2026. It is wonderful news that most of our current tutors are generously offering their courses again in the new year. Do I hear a cheer of gratitude?

We do have sessions available for brand new courses though. Our Centre provides a variety of courses and continues to search out new and varied offerings.
Both members and non-members are invited to apply for the opportunity to lead new courses and contribute their expertise to our community. All our tutors are volunteers dedicated to sharing their knowledge and fostering connections within our community.

Information on becoming a tutor is available on our website along with a New Tutor and Course application form. Tutors -

Knitting and Crochet Work Group

Monday AM

This year our class has become a workgroup with the retirement of Maureen Creasy and Fleur Reed. Each week our enthusiastic ladies come along to catch up while working on individual projects and are always willing to assist those who get a little tangled. It is a very relaxed and enjoyable morning for all!

Our classmate, Marilyn Gosnell, travels to South Africa to visit family and friends each year. As a group we decided to use our skills to make beanies for the very disadvantaged, which Marilyn will take to give to a local charity. Past member, Leela Taylor, shared our project with her new craft group and recently contributed two large bundles of beanies.

We are now knitting and crocheting brightly coloured squares to sew into blankets. These projects are optional, while we continue with beautiful personal work.
