Centre Talk

22 June 2025

Dates for your diary
Tuesday 22 July - Semester Two Enrolments open
Monday 4 August - Semester Two commences
Sunday 21 September - Open Day

Welcome...

This last Centre Talk for Semester One includes...

Class Reports, where Ruth encapsulates the fundamental purpose of KCLC classes with this comment 'the real value, as I’m sure all centre members will agree, is in the community and connection the classes provide'. Moreover, these reports showcase the variety of choice at KCLC; two Ukulele classes; where music making, fun and good food seem to be the underlying themes; what it is like to use natural products to dye natural fabrics; the yummy results of the Bread-making class and the woodworking products produced by the Handy Person class.

An update on the crèche includes success in Semester One and what's happening in Semester Two. There is an executive report, links to the Semester 2 Timetable & Workgroups and details for the next electrical tagging.
Editor's musings
Musing for this edition were inspired by the Botanical Dyeing class report. Making dyes from plants, and using natural materials, appeals to the environmentalist in me, while the terms mordant, dyes, wash/rinse took me back to my days of teaching histology- where art and science merge and cellular features are highlighted through the simple use of colour, appealing to the artistic soul. Many of the dyes used in histological stains were originally derived from plants - haematoxylin comes to mind. It is extracted from logwood trees staining the nucleus and extracellular proteins in cells purple. When used with eosin (pink), it is one of the most commonly used stains in pathology for the histological recognition of tissues- guess the tissues below!!!

From the Executive...

It's that time again, we are all off on a well-earned break! Some on holidays others just having time away from the Learning Centre. Enjoy whatever you are doing!

A big thank you to Rosemary and her many helpers for doing the kitchen clean-ups. Our poor neglected cups get a well-earned scrub. Please remember to wash your coffee cup after use, with soap, hot water and a cloth. Thanks again ladies!

We also had our last Executive Meeting for the semester and welcomed John Paskulich as Coordinator and Brian Lawler as Secretary.

Kind Regards
Annie, Anne-Marie and John, KCLC Executive

Crèche News...

The crèche is alive and well!

Three delightful youngsters are being minded in the crèche on Thursday mornings by a happy band of members who joined the crèche workgroup this semester. What a pleasure to watch toddlers become confident in interacting with adults who are not family members. Everyone, children and adults alike, have had loads of fun and learnt a lot.

The crowning joy is that the new baby just loves to be cuddled.

All of the children are returning for Semester Two and I hope that all of the carers will do so too.

There will be room for more members to join the crèche workgroup. Based on the experience of Semester One, the ideal number of carers for each session is three – and this could allow the possible enrolment of another child. So, we will be looking for two persons per Thursday to join Lyndy or myself, and the children in our beautifully equipped crèche. Please click here to find out more information about registering for the crèche roster workgroup.

My heartfelt thanks to all concerned.

Katherine

Semester Two Testing & Tagging...

Any members, who bring in an electrical item and plug it into a powerpoint at KCLC (for example; laptops 💻, sewing machines, power tools, electrical musical instruments 🎸, your favourite coffee maker ☕ , WiFi speaker etc.), must have the item tested and tagged by an electrician.

This service will be available on Wednesday 23 July from 12pm.
Cost is $5/item.

If any members need their items tested and tagged please text/email me (Mary), so I have a list ready before Wednesday 23 July.

Ukes for Fun Class

Wednesday AM
A little gem of a course and, as the name implies, heaps of fun. Annamaria Thorn presides over the group with a firm hand, and she needs one, as we are an unruly mob (well some of us are!).

Each week we play through very eclectic collection of songs, reflecting diverse age groups and backgrounds, from sixties to nineties, and curated lovingly by Annamaria. There are always some that are new to us, presenting a challenge, which can only be good for arresting mental and cognitive decline.

Morning tea halfway through is provided in turn by the members of the group, and there have been some memorable classics, but also quite unusual (but good) offerings. Some members are gluten-intolerant, and it has been a challenge to learn how to cook with GF ingredients for most of us, but successful, to judge from the number of requests for recipes. Talk is of putting together a cookbook from the collection.

All levels, from absolute beginner to advanced are catered for somehow, and the music provided is prepared by Annamaria. Many thanks to her for the time and effort put in. Highly recommended for a bit of light-hearted fun!

'Take your ukukele to bed with you' - recommended by Annamaria to improve your technique 😂😂😂.

Botanical Dyeing Class

Tuesday PM
Rosemary’s Botanical Dyeing Term 2 class was my first foray into the botanical dyeing world. How lucky are we to have a local centre that provides a place for us to try such fantastic new things?
Rosemary’s passion for botanical dyeing is contagious and as a teacher, she has managed to strike a beautiful balance of thoughtful and thorough guidance with enough flexibility and freedom for us to explore our own individual creativity.
Each week, we all delighted in the pieces fellow students had made… the class definitely resulting in a new addiction for most of us!

But, whilst the class has enabled me to learn a wonderful new skill, the real value, as I’m sure all centre members will agree, is in the community and connection the classes provide. The class was made up of such a lovely bunch of ladies, or ‘girls’ as Rosemary called us. I looked forward to coming into the centre each week, a lovely respite from the day-to-day grind, and spending my afternoon with people I wouldn’t have otherwise had the opportunity to meet and get to know.

Basic Breadmaking Class

Thursday PM

The class were provided recipes that will take them from the basics of making a bread roll through to more complex and and tasty challenges.

We have covered bread rolls, three plait loaves (great for garlic bread), a daily loaf, focaccia garlicky, buttery garlic bread, hot cross buns, and cinnamon scrolls.

There was also an Italian-inspired loaf call pano bianco, which basically means white bread but filled with delicious sun dried tomatoes, basil and cheese and shaped into a figure 8.
It's been a lot of fun and I'm very proud of their results, but I decline to being held responsible for unaccountable weight gain 😃

UkeARoos Class

Friday AM
The UkeARoos always look forward to their lively Friday morning jam sessions, with lots of fun and plenty of laughter (and delicious morning teas). Pictured are some of the men in the class, who are always in fine voice, as they lead us through one of the favourites in the songbook.

Handy Persons Class

Friday PM
Well done to the Handy Persons as they proudly show off their completed possum box and tool caddies. Under the expert leadership of their tutor, John Paskulich, the class are learning to use a range of common hand and power tools to complete these fantastic projects.

Class News Semester Two

Please feel free to let us know anything interesting that you are up to in your Semester Two classes, even though we don't have any official class news reporters. Submissions can be emailed to centre_talk@kclc.org.au or written notes handed in to KCLC office.

This can be a class activity, or description, of what happens in the class (or tell us about your wonderful Tutor!). Make it succinct, around 150 words, give or take, and photos. These will be shared in Centre Talk when space permits.
