Welcome...

This Centre Talk includes the KCLC Executive for 2025-2026, a report in images for both the AGM & Centre Lunch, information about the upcoming Semester Two classes, including 'What's New', some Workgroups to join during the enrolment period, and an insight into the Tuesday philosophy class. Moreover, I managed to include all the beautiful patchwork quilts made by the Thursday morning group, while typing in time to the first movement of Tchaikovsky's 1st piano concerto 🎹.
Editors musings
One of my favourite weekends is currently happening; 'ABC Classic 100'. It is the piano this year and, with so much to choose from, but my more traditional 'loves' came to the fore. I realised the piano music I was most passionate about was with an orchestra, especially the slower second movements, and was always accompanied by a memory.

Music has been the accompaniment to my life; classical, jazz, blues...and now an even more eclectic indigenous mix. Beethoven is always numero uno though🤞. I can now report after weekend of piano, Beethovens 5th won ... and his Moonlight Sonata came in #2, although my son only knows accompanied by swear words at the point I always seem to make a mistake when I used to play it... On this happy note, till next time.

Philosophy Discussion Class

Tuesday AM
This Class is lead by Tutor, Gerard Tonks and comprises up to 10 participants.
Gerard, a retired accountant and former university lecturer (Curtin and Notre Dame), studied philosophy as a mature student at Notre Dame University in Fremantle. He has been leading this Philosophy Discussion Group for ten years.

The discussion material is articles drawn from magazines such as Philosophy Now, New Philosopher and Sceptical Inquirer. Students share the reading of these commentaries on philosophical topics and writers who range from the great Greeks, Plato and Aristotle to the more current moderns such as Roger Scruton and Bertrand Russell.
Term Two (2025) was underpinned by the theme from Philosophy Now on the notion of a ‘Return to God?’

Christian believers in the Class accepted the arguments proving the existence of a God, the ‘transcendent reality’, whilst the declared atheists in the Class did not, but were unable to prove the Non-Existence of God. It is hard to prove a negative!

The problem of existence of evil in the World was much discussed.
All Class members learned from one another.

The Term One (2025) theme this Year was 'Arguments for and against Alarmism, Cosmic Purpose, Authenticity (or Absurdity) Freedom'.

Last Year (2024) in 3rd Term the theme was 'Irish Philosophers'.
In the 1st Term the theme was on 'Illusions and Arguments'.

The Class Members talk freely on their opinions and disagreements with one another, but without rancour, so that their minds are stimulated to be active and youthful.

Half of the Class Members have been coming year after year and there are new Members joining each Semester and they are warmly welcomed.

Patchwork Quilting Class

Thursday AM & PM
Our Patchwork Class this year has been enjoyed by previous long-standing members, and also some new members, who have been welcomed into the class and are enjoying the fun and friendship each week.

It was an exciting start to the year for our long-standing, highly esteemed member, Janet West. We all excitedly joined with Janet for the long-awaited grandchild to arrive, making her a first-time Grandma! A beautiful (of course) little baby girl has given such joy to Janet and her family.

New Challenge for 2025

The class was offered a new challenge for the year! We all were invited to submit 3 subject suggestions, and once a month, three of these subjects were drawn out of the bag, and we had the choice of combining these subjects into a piece of fabric art!! Some are patchwork piecing, some are appliqué. It will be interesting to see the final work of these challenges at the end of the year. This has got the creative juices running!
Last year there was a challenge of making a “mystery quilt” and the various colours chosen by the participants was amazing. We all had the pattern for one part at a time, and never knew how the quilts would turn out. I believe, though some frustration by some, the end results were rewarding. Well done to all those of us who participated. Some images are included for your information. Thank you to Prue for providing the instruction and encouragement along the way.

Our valued Tutor Prue Linge has not been able to be present full-time due to some other commitments (that is what retirement is about isn’t it?} and Tracey Radford has ably led us during Prue’s absent times. Thank you to Prue and Tracey for your leadership and help!

All of our class enjoy each other’s company from week to week and the satisfaction of completing various projects! If you are interested in sewing and learning some new skills, our class is highly recommended.

Class News Semester Two

Please feel free to let us know anything interesting that you are up to in your Semester Two classes, even though we don't have any official class news reporters next Semester. Submissions can be emailed to centre_talk@kclc.org.au or written notes handed in to KCLC office.

This can be a class activity, or description, of what happens in the class (or tell us about your wonderful Tutor!). Make it succinct, around 150 words, give or take, and photos. These will be shared in Centre Talk when space permits.
