Centre Talk

11 May 2025

Dates for your diary
Friday 16 May - CLG Meeting 10.30am
Friday 6 June - AGM 12noon
Sunday 21 September - Open Day

Welcome...

Welcome to the Mother's Day edition. I am writing this as I listen to the Mother's Day request show on Classic FM. I could only live in hope my son would be organised enough to request my favourite piece, Chaconne in G Minor by Vitale, but this is not his forte. He does make a great eggs Benedict, but it is 10am and nothing has happened so far 😂. Whatever is your tradition, today is a chance to pause, and remember our mothers and all those that care about us.

This Centre Talk includes a reminder about the AGM, Bridget has a great synopsis on what happens on Open Day as a segue into asking for volunteers for the 21st September. Photos from the 2024 Open Day accompany this piece. It is not too late to wait-list the Winter Master Classes, and the Lost Property is quite an eclectic mix. The class news embraces both physical and mental well-being: Tai Chi and Writing Creatively. Moreover, some members of the creative writing entered the Armadale Twenty Five competition, and all won places. Finally, the display cabinet is full of dressmaking examples. Check out the work completed by this group next time you drop into the centre.

Editorial musings

Through a series of conversations about three weeks ago, I became a tutor for a course (Drifting Through the Environment). I loved the experience, not sure about the class members, but I can recommend becoming a tutor. Why? Having knowledge is better when you can share, and discuss, it with others. Viva la différence... opinions, backgrounds, interests but a common curiosity bought us together. Skills I thought I would not use again came back, information percolated up from the depths of my brain and, although it took a week, I won the war with the KCLC technology. I must thank Mary, who pulled out all stops and got me up and running the first week.

Take the plunge.
Note: KCLC is still accepting enrolments for this course as well as applications for new tutors and courses for Semester Two.

Open Day 2025...

On Sunday 21st September the Centre will be hosting our Open Day. For all the new members of KCLC, this is a day when we can showcase all the work we have done since last year and includes work from past years. The display has been amazing.
I particularly like Scrap to Sculpture, which shows the incredible imagination of the members of the class with materials that most people would throw out.

The various art classes show that the talent in the Centre is up there with the big galleries.
Pottery is another class that seems to come up with unique ideas of what you can do with clay. Calligraphy, needlecraft, baking, in fact every class seems to have something to display though Table Tennis is possibly a little impractical to have a demonstration of the game due to lack of space and history and philosophy a slight problem too.

In the Craft Room we will have our Market Place which is a space where people can sell their own home-made wares. Handicrafts, cooking, artwork and plants can all be sold as long as it is your own work. All sales are recorded and the owner gets all the proceeds less 10% which goes to the Centre. The room is also shared with the Pottery.

All the rooms are used for displays with the hall being half used for art displays and the other half used as a café.

The café, in my mind, is one of the best parts of Open Day as the usually home-made foods that people donate, are delicious and the soups are so good. All this is served with a smile and if the weather is good then there will be tables and chairs out on the deck so you can have a dainty snack or meal and watch the entertainment at the same time. If you have volunteered to help on the 21st September then you will get your meal provided for free as a Thank You for helping on this great social day.

The Creche area is a designated used book stall. This is where you can donate your unwanted but good condition books which are sold with the proceeds going to KCLC. This is always very popular and often people will buy more books than they have donated.

On the deck (weather permitting) we will have displays by the Tai Chi class, the Ukulele class and hopefully the singing classes. Also on the deck we will try to have a White Elephant stall again but more in view as last year it was rather hidden away at the end of the deck.
This event is always very well attended as members like to show their families the work that they do along with the general public who have heard of the Learning Centre but don’t know how it works. This is where you need to go out and tell everyone about it and how good it is.

At the end of the day, any left over food, books and white elephant goes to a charity shop in Forrestfield where they either sell it or pass it on to other charity shops or in the case of food, then that goes to those most in need.

If you think you will be free on the 20th (setting up) or the 21st September for the big day, please put you name down for volunteering as a workgroup when you enrol next semester. Your stint will be no more than two hours either setting up, food preparation, serving, stall minding, or clearing up. The latter is usually done very quickly as we have to be out of the building by 5.00pm.

Class News...

Writing Creatively

Monday AM
The facilitator of the Monday Creative Writing class, Tania Park, set a task for the group to write on the topic of Twenty-Five for a contest. This is from the Armadale Writers and was set as a project to celebrate twenty-five years of their existence. It could be a poem or a short story under five hundred words.

Tania thought it was a difficult topic but was stunned at the results, She had encouraged all of her group to send in their pieces to the competition. It was an even bigger surprise when all of those who did enter won places. The two poems by Lee Caldwell and Ann Grylls came first and second, respectively. Tania, Megan McCormack, Lee Caldwell and Theo Pabst won places in the short story section.

All the pieces will be published later in 2025 Anthology that is produced by both Creative Writing groups at KCLC.

The group were at the award presentations on the 4th May (see below).

Tai Chi – Is for Life

Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday AM

Over the years Kalamunda area has been fortunate to have an exceptional Tai Chi Community run by Mike and Ranee Jefferson.
Tai Chi is a “Chinese Martial Art”, consisting of sequences with very slow controlled movements.

The Kalamunda Community Learning Centre has a strong Tai Chi following where classes are welcoming and encouraging. The venue has an idyllic view out through the tree tops where different native birds can be seen.
Classes are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings for beginners and advanced students.

There are numerous health benefits to Tai Chi practice including, balance & co-ordination, increased flexibility & strength, joint & respiratory health.

As Mike says “It takes effort to make it look effortless”.

Tai Chi movements are gentle and only done to your personal capabilities so complete beginners and experienced people are welcome.

Display Cabinet...

Dressmaking for pleasure.

The display cabinet is currently filled with examples of this craft, and underpins the pleasure bought to those who can...

Apparently, dressmaking dates back more than 9000 years and parallels the development of textiles, although the first clothes were animal skins!

Lost Property...

Don’t forget to head to Reception if you are missing anything so we can check to see whether it has been handed in. As of Monday 5 May we had the following pictured items in our Lost Property Box and it would be great to reunite the items with their owners.
