Welcome...
Welcome back to Term 2. I hope everyone had a lovely Easter break; family, friends, chocolate and maybe even a trip away. All these activities refresh and invigorate both body and mind.
This Centre Talk includes information about the next Annual General Meeting. If you are planning to become more involved in KCLC this is your chance. Please note the change in the annual KCLC OPEN DAY to avoid a clash with Father's Day. I felt guilty 😳 when I received the note about cleaning cups. Scrub instead of rinse only is the take-home message. There are still places available for those still thinking about joining a class. Take the plunge; the humour and social benefits alone are worth it ☕. There is also a request from Bronwyn for new tutors; I am hoping a retired Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers would start a dance class 💃.
Science and visual arts feature in the class reports this issue. Science, from subatomic to outer space, were topics covered in the Science without the Maths. Meanwhile, Projects in Progress covers embroidery and decoupage (I had to look this word up - thank goodness for Wikipedia.)

Editorial musings
For various reasons in the last week I had to look back to the past; what did I learn? Time goes very fast when you hit your 70s, some things seem like yesterday. Despite the aging process, recall memory is still capable of bringing back knowledge of subjects you may think have disappeared - I could plan in my head and set a framework. Subsequent glancing at resources brought recognition memory into play, and provided forgotten detail. Apparently, recalling information strengthens long-term memory so another good reason to become a tutor.

Our tea and coffee cups are feeling neglected!
We make at least 700 cups of tea or coffee each week and we deserve to be cleaned after each use!
Please everyone WASH your cup in lovely warm soapy water, with a sponge. Not just a rinse.
Several reasons, cold, flu and covid season is approaching.
Clean unstained cups make clean-up day easier for our helpers.
And I am sure everyone appreciates a clean cup!

Term Two Course Vacancies...
We still have limited vacancies for some courses in Term Two. If you wish to enrol in one of these please visit Reception, preferably during the first week of term. It is better for the tutor and class if all new class members start together in the first session of the term.

Semester Two - New Courses...
We are seeking applications from prospective tutors and facilitators to run new courses or workshops in Semester Two. The Semester Two program is published two weeks prior to the end of this term so it would be great to receive applications by Monday 19 May so they can be set up.
Some areas where members have expressed interest are:
- Italian for Beginners.
- Sign Language.
- Artificial Intelligence: what it is, how to use it effectively, how not to be fooled by it.
- Photo imaging and editing programs: e.g. Photoshop and/or Canva.
- Photo booking.
- Gardening – someone to facilitate visits to local gardens maybe.
- Art Studio Visits – someone to facilitate visits to some of our many local artists.
- Dancing - Our dear editor has suggested a dancing course. We could possibly squeeze one in the hall on Tuesday mornings from 10.50am to 12.15pm.
Please let me know if any of the above, or something quite different is your area of interest or expertise and you would love to share your knowledge and passion. Please email me at registrar@kclc.org.au.

Amazing Science without the Maths
We have just completed the 7 week course of Science without the Maths. I would like to express my thanks to Mike Barlow, for putting together the 7 week course with his easy to understand PowerPoint® presentations. When I use the word easy, I use it loosely; in the sense that, as most people know, the physical sciences, are not usually easy to get your mind around.
However, Mikes' style of presentation accompanied by across-the-table discussions, and clarification, made each subject more engaging and illuminating, indeed some more than others, “Light” for example!? Does it behave like a wave or particle? (Ed).
The subjects covered were; Water, Heat, Atoms, Gravity, Light, Galaxies and finally a small section on numbers 🔭.
As you can see, the course covered a good range; each week had something to pique the interest and as for myself and I’m sure others in the group, an urge to go and explore a bit more on the subject.
I would urge anyone with the slightest interest in the physical sciences, to go and give it a try, as I don’t think you will be disappointed.
Please note: Amazing Science will be offered again in Term 4.

Projects in Progress, or PIPs for short, is a self-governed class where each class member works on their own current project in progress. Class numbers fluctuate depending on what is happening in members' lives but we are mostly a group of about 8/9. Whilst working on our projects we ruminate over a wide variety of subjects and regale in the antics of one of our member's chickens.
The majority of our members are currently completing embroidery projects of which we are happy to report we had our first completed embroidery project for the year. We also have one member who works on a variety of decoupage projects using a variety of new and up-cycled items.
We are a very congenial group and members are very happy to lend their expertise to assist others as required. So, if you have an uncompleted project that is taking up space in your home and you keep looking at it with every good intention to finish it come along to our class and you never know you may actually complete it.

Registrar's Rambles...
Question: What is the difference between being a Tutor or a Facilitator?
Tutors are responsible for the content and the running of the course: they prepare material, run tutorials, lead discussions, teach skills etc. Facilitators participate in the classes, which are generally workshop-style courses. They are the contact person for the workshop and facilitate a cooperative learning environment. While they might sometimes instigate a teaching session led by themselves or other class members, members usually work on their own projects with some advice from the facilitator.
Benefits: Both tutors and facilitators receive the same benefits: • The joy of sharing knowledge and skills with others. • At the end of the semester, they receive a store credit coupon for the value of the course they led or facilitated, excluding levies. Some courses have two facilitators who share the responsibility, in which case they share the value of the coupon. • They are allocated a Tutor Membership at no cost, so they don’t need to pay the yearly Community Membership fee. • They don’t need to enrol in the course. • They are invited to the wonderful end-of-year ‘Thank You Dinner’.
