Centre Talk

20 October 2024

Dates for your diary
Friday 25 October - Centre Presents Speaker
Friday 1 November - General Meeting
Friday 29 November - Last Day of Term
Term 4 has commenced. Time to catch up with friends. Much to talk about and information to exchange before, and after, classes. The general noise levels at these times are a great indication of the social benefits of attending the KCLC and contributes to the success.

Editor-in-training, Marilyn (M).
Mentor Caroline.

From the Executive...

Please Share Your KCLC Memories!!!

The KCLC has just had its 47th birthday, a prime number no less. We would love to hear your stories from both the early days of KCLC and your more recent experiences. Together these would feature changes over the years and highlight common themes that underpin the KCLC philosophy ensuring it continued success.
A paragraph or three (3) would be lovely. These will be displayed on the notice board and collated eventually into a folder for everyone's enjoyment.

Send your contribution via an email to Mary at office_manager@kclc.org.au or a hard copy dropped into the office.

Thank you and looking forward to reading your contributions.

KCLC General Meeting

Class news...

Conversational French

We assembled at KCLC back in February, a mixed bunch of aspiring francophones, male and female, from across our shared planetary home (aka earth). Some of us were possibly more interested (certainly I was – and still am) in the gastronomic and enological learnings involved in identifying, visiting, and then assessing Michelin starred restaurants and vineyards, or similar such as the Relais Routier, preferably In France.
Lunch in Montpellier
A prudent fellow student enquired whether or not there would be any homework. The French word for homework is “devoir”, which co-incidentally doubles as a verb meaning “to have to do something, i.e. you must”. Our excellent teacher explained that “devoir” would not be “obligatoire”. But she did send us “advisory” homework emails after our first class, and every week subsequently, even in the vacations. What a smart move!
Jeanette is not a long-experienced teacher for nothing. Peer group pressure has always been a great catalyst or, as the saying goes “If you don’t want to be left behind, you have to keep up”. The rest is history as our command of French has increased in leaps and bounds, albeit in direct proportion to our decreasing leisure time.
Personally, I look forward to next year and hopefully finding out more about French gastronomy and viticulture, and perhaps less to do with irregular verbs, the grammatical positioning of pronouns and all the other linguistic encumbrances which a French citizen may now better understand from our class of aspiring tyros.
Thank you and Season’s Best to Jeanette and all of the class.

Mahjong

A KCLC mantra is “Look after your tutors”. However, I want to tell you about two tutors who turn the tables and look after their students.
Gail tutors Mahjong. For the first week back each term she caters for afternoon tea, bringing with her enough provisions to feed an army. Her splendid sandwiches and cakes are abundant enough to provide take away.

She infuses the class with her enormous energy, and when not playing herself, buzzes around, giving help to those of us struggling with Crazy Chows, Apple Blossom and The Three Philosophers-Join a Mahjong class to find out more about this fascinating game.

Then there is Theresa, the other tutor. Theresa has been around for the 47 years of the life of KCLC, though she says she missed the first term. She has a treasure trove of stories about past members and tutors, and about Kalamunda history in general. Another caterer par excellence, she indulges us with profusion of home-made cannoli and other Italian delights.

The two of them astound us with their ability to play their own hands, while at the same time memorising the hands held by other players then nudging us when we blank out and miss the discards we’re meant to be watching for.

We are all extremely grateful for the time and energy given by two amazing women.

✍ Please feel free to let us know anything interesting that you are up to in your classes, even though we don't have any official class news reporters this semester. A short snippet with a photo is perfect. Submissions can be emailed to centre_talk@kclc.org.au or written notes handed in to KCLC office. Thank you to those who have contributed.

P.S. There was a bare cabinet this week that needs filling with the accomplishments/undertakings of a class.

Registrar's Rambles...

Hi!

In this regular segment, I hope to address some enrolment FAQs and offer enrolment advice...
Question: Why have we restricted visitors to some classes?
We had many more visitors in Semester One than we would normally expect, and an analysis of these attendances revealed some concerns. We realised that many people did not know the rules stated in the current by-laws (i.e. visitors could only attend for one session, and they must be registered at reception) and these by-laws needed to be re-defined to make them clearer.

We identified that there are two types of visitors: prospective members wishing to try a course before enrolling and guests of members. To assist those who need to discern whether to accept a visitor or a guest we have set guidelines for each course and advised/consulted with the respective tutors.

Some of the issues that were taken into consideration are:
The nature of the course - It is not suitable for visitors to attend a course that follows a series of tutorials or doesn’t accept casual class members, as this could inconvenience the tutor and class. Courses with specific health and safety requirements are also closed to visitors unless the tutor has given prior approval.
Full courses - Courses that have reached their maximum class numbers but still have some room capacities are generally closed to visitors. However, a few of these tutors have indicated they will accept a visitor with prior approval provided there is no one on the waitlist. Courses that have reached their room capacity are closed to visitors. There is no point in a prospective member trialling the class if they cannot then enrol and it would be inappropriate to accept a guest (even if a class member is absent) if others can’t enrol, this is especially pertinent when the course has an active waitlist.
First two weeks of the semester - It is not appropriate to accept visitors in this time frame as classes are settling in and adjustments are being made.

The by-laws that relate to visitors have been revised and will be presented at the General Meeting to be held on Friday 1 November.
