Centre Talk

02 March 2025

Dates for your diary
Monday 3 March - Centre Closed (Labour Day)
Friday 21 March - Centre Lunch
Friday 28 March - General Meeting
Friday 11 April - Last day of Term

Welcome

The first two weeks of classes have been and gone. Members reconnecting and meeting new ones. Laughter, conversations, music and the clink of cups are several of the sounds emanating from the various rooms. It is good to be back.

This Centre Talk includes an opportunity for experienced silversmiths to continue with their craft, news from the on-going Wednesday 'Write your Life Story' class, a reminder that catching the bus to KCLC is an option during semesters (thank you Patricia), good news about Crèche availability, a request to fill the empty foyer cabinet and Bronwyn answers the question 'Why aren’t fees for all full-semester courses the same?'.

Reminder: KCLC is closed on Monday 3 March for the Labour Day public holiday.

Editorial musings

The opportunity to muse as a newsletter editor, had me researching what is a newsletter and the role of an editor. Apparently, the ancient Romans used newsletters to exchange information between friends and officials. Nothing new under the sun.

Why do I want to muse? The irony of life. Listening to Classic FM on Monday 17th February, in "Who did it best", Beethovens 3rd 'The Eroica' was the piece under discussion. This music reflected Beethoven's optimism about the world (circa 1803), and was a tribute to Bonaparte. When Bonaparte declared himself Emperor, Beethoven raged and exclaimed, "So he is no more than a common mortal! Now, too, he will tread under foot all the rights of Man, indulge only his ambition; now he will think himself superior to all men, become a tyrant!". Remind you of anyone?

Expressions of Interest...

Silversmithing: Wednesday PM

We have the opportunity to offer a Wednesday afternoon silversmithing session for those experienced in this craft. This will enable them to work on their own projects and aimed at those who know their craft but do not have specific tools (mills etc.) and need a place to work. It would not be for beginners.

The session would be facilitated by Fadwa, a very experienced silversmith.

If you are interested in this session, please contact the registrar so a course can be created if there is enough interest. Please email registrar@kclc.org.au.

Class News...

Write Your Life Story, Continuing Class

Wednesday morning

The Wednesday morning 'Write Your Life Story Continuing Class' consists of authors, who have previously attended the course. This group has been refining their writing skills for between one to ten years and all members are keen to put pen to paper again. Record their lifetimes of experience by getting their ideas down, for subsequent feedback and editing. A circular, repeating process that sharpens the final document.

Why do it? The reasons are simple. To produce a book, or simply record information, about the zeitgeist of their times, for future generations.

Under the guidance of our Tutor, Gerry Brown, individuals share their stories, tips and advice so that the final collation of written stories will be both a polished book, and finished in a timely manner.

Halfway through the morning, time is taken for a delicious morning tea and a social chat.

Catch a ride to KCLC...

The buses that come to Kalamunda Community Centre are hardly used by KCLC clientele.

This was an observation by a member and prompted this reminder to let all those who perhaps no longer drive, or prefer to be driven, that this service exists.

Note: It runs to and from Kalamunda Bus Station where it connects to routes 273, 274, 275, 276.

For timetables, please click here.

Crèche News...

The Crèche is up and running on Thursday mornings thanks to the kindness and generosity of the wonderful members who have volunteered on Crèche roster.

Mums have been able to continue in their classes from last year, for which they are very grateful indeed. Well done KCLC! Please be proud of this great outcome.

Katherine, Creche Liaison

Containers for Change...

Please note that there is now a new spot for the Containers For Change drop off bin. The bin has been moved into the courtyard at the front of the building to prevent ants coming into the entrance foyer (and to keep the area looking tidier).

Please visit Reception and the gate can be opened for you to leave your containers.

We thank everyone who has been donating their recyclable cans and bottles to KCLC!

Display Cabinet...

She went to the cabinet and it was bare!!

I know it is the start of semester but it would be really great to see some of the work produced by classes, whether current or past. It would be encouraging for new members to have some idea of the range of activities undertaken at the Centre.

I suggested our Ukulele Fun class record a song and have that playing in a loop. This was after the door was closed on our class for the 2nd week in a row 😂.

To save the Reception staff's auditory senses, please fill the cabinet soon.

Registrar's Rambles...

Hi!

In this regular segment, I hope to address some enrolment FAQs and offer enrolment advice...
Question: Why aren’t fees for all full-semester courses the same?

All course fees are based on $5 per session. Each of our semesters is 16 weeks, hence a full-semester course is charged at $80. Public holidays however have an impact. This semester for example has two Monday public holidays so these course fees are reduced to $70.

Fees for some courses include an additional levy to cover the cost of resources used. Our pricing policy is that all courses must pay their own way; any additional costs must be paid by the class members and not be subsidised by the membership. For example, a $12 book hire levy is included for all the Book Clubs, Pottery courses include a $20 levy to cover the maintenance of the kiln, Silversmithing has a $15 levy for the use of gas and equipment, Botanical Dyeing a $8 levy for gas and the Drawing course has a $40 levy for the life models.

In some courses, members are asked to pay an additional small fee directly to the tutor to cover the cost of photocopying etc.

In Memoriam...

Val Lee

Book Club 9 is missing our Val Lee, who died a couple of weeks ago. Val was a remarkable woman, who raised 8 children in various parts of WA as she went with her husband Bill Lee to his various Education Department postings including Halls Creek and Reid on the Nullabor.
Val was well read took delight - even at the end of her life - in discussing current social, cultural, economic and historic events.

She was a generous, kind woman, who would help anyone. I rarely heard her be critical of anyone, even if she may not agree with their views. Val was always well turned out, took pride in her appearance and had a reputation as a wonderful cook and baker.

In our book club, Val always read the book, made notes a great help for us less diligent folk. Val may not have always liked the book yet she still read it.

Val will be missed by her many friends at the Learning Centre especially Book Club 9. We remembered her during the first class this year.

A life truly well lived, one to be proud and celebrated.

Lee Kenney

Lee's membership at KCLC reflected the ethos that makes this centre successful: she was a class member, tutor and involved in administration.

She was one of the first 'exchange treasurers' at the old Learning Centre from 1983 to 1987. She also taught German from 1985 to 1987. Mum undertook many classes; these included mahjong (with Teresa D'ermilio who still plays there), and cane weaving producing trays and baskets.

Her funeral will be held next Thursday 6 March at Bowra and O'Dea, Midland, between 1.15 to 3.15pm.
