Centre Talk

11 August 2024

Dates for your diary
Friday 16 August - Centre Lunch
Friday 23 August - Centre Presents Speaker
Sunday 8 September - Open Day
Friday 20 September - Last day of Term 3

And they're off...

The Second Semester is well underway and it has been wonderful seeing everyone back enjoying classes. Don't forget the Centre Lunch this Friday and don't forget to start gathering all your books and bric-a-brac items ready for Open Day.

The Executive Team has reduced the frequency of their meetings (to help reduce their huge amount of volunteer hours) so we won't always have a 'From the Executive' section. But there's still plenty to read in this fortnight's edition!

Acting Editor, Caroline

Registrar's Rambles...

As many of you will be aware, we had a problem this enrolment period with so many members hitting the site at the same time. We are currently undergoing diagnostic testing as well as having a clean out of our database. As part of this process, we will be removing User Accounts that have been inactive since January 2022.
If you fall into this category (i.e. have not registered for KCLC Membership in 2022, 2023 or 2024) but would like us to retain your User Account, please let us know by Sunday 25 August by sending a message to RollsAdmin@kclc.org.au.

If you are happy for us to remove your account (which you can set up again at any time) but would like to continue receiving Centre Talk, please subscribe to Centre Talk separately by clicking here.

Bronwyn, Registrar

Snippets...

Desperately seeking

On Tuesday 30 July, at around 12.30pm, a black finger splint was left on the tiles in the ladies bathroom. Approximately 10 minutes later, after going back to look for it, the splint had disappeared. If anyone knows where the black finger splint may have gone, please let the Office know. Thank you. Annie, Coordinator

Housekeeping

Please can we ask that you do not leave items in the Craft (Black) Room storage shelves as donations for other members to use or take anything without prior authorisation through the Office. While we appreciate donations, we need to limit them as we have limited storage for our classes. Thank you. Annie, Coordinator

Great Workgroup opportunity

We need two or three more volunteers to help in the Crèche on Thursday mornings to assist our wonderful crèche staff with the beautiful babies and entrancing toddlers entrusted to their care. Volunteers each do two sessions 9am to 12pm. There are roster vacancies coming up on 5 and 12 September and some in Term 4 also. If you can help, please contact Mary in the Office or email Office_Manager@kclc.org.au. Katherine, Creche Liaison

Centre Talk Editor needed

We are seeking Expressions of Interest for the role of Centre Talk Editor. Unfortunately Val had to step down towards the end of last Semester due to health reasons. The perfect candidate will be well organised, enjoy keeping abreast of all the goings on at the Centre, have access to a computer and the internet, be able to copy and paste and have good writing/editing skills. Full training and ongoing support will be provided on the platform used to put together the newsletter and a team of proof readers will help make sure Centre Talk looks and reads fantastically before it is sent. Please email communications@kclc.org.au to express your interest. A big thank you to Val for filling the role for the last 15 months, she has done a marvellous job at keeping us all informed. Caroline, Website Editor

The Display Cabinet...

We hope you have enjoyed the display in the cabinet from the Wednesday am and pm Painting Workshops.

The work demonstrates a remarkable diversity of style, media and methods.

Our Wednesday Painting Workshops have a few things in common... We all look forward to not only the exhilarating experience of creating art, but also having developed a strong social bond. We are a very happy group who work very well together and assist one another where and when it's needed.

Wednesdays are a highlight of the week for us all, supporting each other and providing the best snacks and morning/afternoon teas!

Andrea and Steve

Open Day...

Kalamunda Community Learning Centre is opening its doors between 10am and 4pm on Sunday 8 September for its much-anticipated Open Day. Admission is free and everyone is invited! It's a fantastic opportunity for students and tutors from the Centre to showcase the art and crafts from their classes to enthral and inspire.

Just a few reminders...
  • Members can start bringing in their book donations and items for the White Elephant Stall from Monday 26 August. Please remember that we are not allowed to sell electrical goods!
  • Tutors, please make sure you hand in your participation forms to the Office as soon as possible (even if you are unable to participate).
  • There are still some Open Day Workgroups to be filled, particularly assisting with the Cafe and the Members' Market. If you are able to assist in any way, please pop your name down for a Workgroup.

Bridget, Open Day Workgroup Leader

Class News...

Writing Creatively

The two facilitators from the Monday and Tuesday Writing Creatively groups, spent the break collating, editing and laying out an anthology of short pieces written by the class participants. This resulted in a hotline between Garry and Tania’s house with many sighs, curses and hurrahs - and a burnt soup pot in the Park household.
As a self-published author, Tania uploaded the results to her printing company and the printed book, A Tangle of Yarns, arrived last week. A local resident, Karen Roberts, created a fabulous cover for the book.

Over forty short stories and poems are presented in 170 pages of ups and downs, joys and sorrows, murder and mayhem along with the weird and the wonderful. Each author can be mighty proud of their creativity.

To cover costs of production, a limited number of books are available at $20 each. Please contact either Garry Davies or Tania Park through the Centre, if you would like a copy.
